  3. Veteran NHS fundraiser hits £17.5mpublished at 08:19 British Summer Time 17 April 2020

A 99-year-old war veteran who is originally from West Yorkshire has walked 100 laps of his garden, with the aid of a walking frame, to raise £17.5m and counting for the NHS.

    Capt Tom Moore

Keighley-born Capt Tom Moore originally aimed to raise just £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by completing laps of his garden before his 100th birthday.

But he has smashed his target after nearly 800,000 people made donations to his fundraising page.

"I never dreamt I would be involved in such an occasion as this," he said at the end of his final lap.

This morning Capt Tom's JustGiving page, which temporarily crashed after he finished the challenge nearly 24 hours earlier, is showing donations of more than £17.5m.

The total includes an undisclosed donation from the Duke of Cambridge, who also wrote to the World War Two veteran.

Capt Tom's daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore said: "We are absolutely floored by what has been achieved but we're so happy, so humbled and so proud.

"He's a beacon of hope in dark times and I think we all need something like this to believe in and it's for such an amazing cause."

The man was given the news about his medals having been recovered just hours after being discharged from hospital intensive care, where he'd been treated for coronavirus.

The medals had been taken, along with other sentimental items, in a burglary at the man’s family home near Barnsley at the end of January, say police.

They were found by the side of a road near Kellington in North Yorkshire along with a small jewellery box containing a number of baby teeth and a commemorative coin inscribed with "Paige’s 1st teeth", which belonged to the man’s daughter.

A relative of the family recognised the items and made contact with officers less than two hours after an appeal for information about the items was issued.

On being reunited with his medals, the man said: “I am over the moon as I did not expect to see my medals again – they mean so much to me as they represent my 22 years of service with The Light Dragoons.”

A spokesman for the North Yorkshire force said: “It was an incredible find.

"Within minutes of us sharing the appeal on Facebook, we were inundated with emails offering helpful advice on how we could help to identify the owners of the medals."

A councillor was kicked out of Sheffield Council’s first ever virtual meeting after a row about officers not including a number of objections in a licensing hearing.

Councillor Douglas Johnson, who sits on the committee, was forced to exit the video call to discuss a new bar when he raised concerns about missing comments from the public.

Mr Johnson said he was made aware of extra objections through local residents and questioned why there was no reference to them in the officers’ report which the committee read before making a decision.

He said: “It’s completely inappropriate for officers to do filtering, especially when the objection clearly relates to licensing. So I’m going to ask that the committee is deferred until all the relevant papers are together."

Marie-Claire Frankie, council legal adviser, said it was a requirement of officers to “only put that which is relevant” into reports and said filtering objections was acceptable.

It was then decided that Mr Johnson should leave the meeting as he had information other decision-makers did not.

The row went on for more than half an hour near the start of the meeting before Councillor Bob Pullin stepped in as a substitute for Mr Johnson.

Proceedings continued until it went into private session for the committee to confer on a decision.

  13. Over 150 fines issued to lockdown-flouters in two weekspublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 16 April 2020

More than 150 fines have been issued in 14 days in North Yorkshire to people failing to comply with coronavirus restrictions, the county's police force has revealed.

    Police checkpoint in York

Since 2 April, 153 fines have been issued to "a minority of people", according to North Yorkshire Police.

The force says its officers have spoken to thousands of people since the restrictions were introduced and taken nearly 2,000 reports from members of the public about suspected breaches.

Assistant Ch Con Mike Walker said: ““Most people understand the gravity of the situation we face, most people are moved by the tragic stories we've seen, and most have stayed at home.

"Each area brings its own challenges, for example all the fines issued in the Yorkshire Dales were issued to visitors, but in Scarborough and York the majority were issued to residents."

Julia Mulligan, North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, added: “We must ensure the huge effort put in by the many who are selflessly complying is not undone by the dangerous few who aren’t.”

  15. 'Inspired' Wetherby boy raises thousands with daily walkpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 16 April 2020

A young boy from West Yorkshire who's been inspired by an Army veteran's efforts to raise money for the NHS has set himself a challenge of his own to celebrate his birthday.

    HectorImage source, Georgie Dee

Hector, who lives with his mum and dad in Wetherby, planned to walk six miles over six days for his sixth birthday.

With an initial target of £36, he has now raised more than £2,100 for NHS workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

He was inspired by 99-year-old Captain Tom Moore - a Keighley-born Army veteran who has been walking 100 laps of his garden to raise money for the NHS before his 100th birthday.

Mr Moore has so far raised more than £12m.

Hector's mum, Georgie Dee, said: "He's found the lockdown and pandemic a bit confusing so we've been talking about the positive things.

"He just came out with, 'I want to do something to raise money for the doctors and nurses because they're amazing'."

The family decided to create a fundraising page so other people across the country could donate towards the £36 target.

Georgie said: "I'm in this Facebook group and I didn't realise how many members were in it - turns out it's 200,000. I shared it there and it's all gone a bit crazy.

"In two hours he raised almost £1,400. He's been a bit surprised by it all.

"We've been trying to put it into context for him to help him understand how much it is. He's had messages from six out of seven continents."

  16. Cancer patients shouldn't be 'back of the queue' - Charitypublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 16 April 2020

A charity has said cancer patients should not be put to the "back of the queue" because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    Lisa Brassington

Brain Tumour Research was commenting after a woman from West Yorkshire was told her chemotherapy for a brain tumour would be delayed.

Lisa Brassington, from Baildon, was told she could not begin treatment until July.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said it was reviewing all cancer patients who may be at risk of contracting coronavirus.

Ms Brassington was diagnosed with a low-grade oligodendroglioma tumour in 2011. The 51-year-old completed treatment in 2019 and believed the tumour had stopped growing.

However, at an MRI scan in March it emerged it had started to grow again and her oncology team determined she needed another round of chemotherapy.

She said: "Because of the coronavirus I am unable to have it immediately. I would love it to start tomorrow, but it's just so risky. I'm not angry, no-one is to blame for coronavirus."

The NHS logo is to be projected across scaffolding at Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham as a major restoration project continues at the South Yorkshire landmark.

People are being asked not to head to Wentworth to see the projection, but to check social media instead.

  19. Nurse's coronavirus death should be 'wake-up call' - MPpublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 16 April 2020

The death from coronavirus of a Harrogate Hospital nurse should be "a wake up call for the government", an MP has said.

Mother-of-five Josiane Zauma Ebonja Ekoli, known as Josie, from Leeds, died on Monday after working as a nurse for more than 30 years.

Her daughter says she'd criticised the equipment she'd been given to protect herself at work.

Leeds North East Labour MP Fabian Hamilton says: "There is a mismatch between the pronouncements we hear from 10 Downing Street and the reality on the front line for people like Josie.

"How many more staff like her need to be infected, or tragically to die the way she has, before this issue is resolved?"

The government has previously said there is enough personal protective equipment to go around.

But supply of protective gowns is critically low in some hospitals, according to Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers in England.
