    Police in Huddersfield say they're working with the fire service to determine exactly how a phone mast came to be ablaze in the early hours of this morning.

    Emergency services were called to the fire at Fearnleys Mill at about 01:40 after reports that a mast, attached to a chimney on Lower Quarry Road, was alight.

    The blaze was "significant" and posed a risk to occupants of 37 flats in a nearby four-storey building, according to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

    The building was "safely evacuated", according to police, and a total of six fire crews - about 25 firefighters - tackled the blaze.

    It destroyed communications equipment used by the emergency services as well as three mobile phone network providers, the fire service says.

    A man's been arrested after a report of indecent exposure in Halifax.

    A woman walking in Savile Park at about 11:00 on Wednesday 3 April said a man exposed himself to her.

    A 29-year-old man has since been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on bail, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information about it, is being asked to contact police.

    Former Sheffield United star Harry Maguire hopes his offer of supplying a food package of everyday essentials to the elderly in his home village can provide "small comfort" during the coronavirus crisis.

    The England defender says he and his father approached Herrings Top Shop in Mosborough about the idea for those aged 70 and over - or their carers - in the area.

    He said: "I am very proud of my Mosborough roots - it's where I grew up and where my family still live. I come back to visit everyone as much as I can.

    "There's always been a real sense of community in the area which is more important than ever at the moment. In times like these, you think a lot about your loved ones and those more elderly.

    "My family and I hope this provides a small comfort to people who might be struggling."

    A woman in York has been charged with drink-driving while using a mobility scooter.

    The incident happened on Saturday night.

    Writing on social media, PC Will Leah said police attended a report of “a drunk female driving a mobility scooter in York”.

    A woman was arrested under suspicion of drug/drink-driving, possession of cannabis and failing to comply with the Coronavirus Act 2020.

    The officer said “she blew 106 [micrograms] in custody” and was charged the following morning. The legal drink-drive limit is 35 micrograms:

    Vandals have damaged two buses providing transport for key workers in Hull during the coronavirus crisis.

    The windows of both buses were smashed outside Castle Hill Hospital on Sunday evening.

    Ben Gilligan, area director of East Yorkshire buses, said: "I'm absolutely appalled two of our buses were targeted by vandals throwing objects and smashing windows."

    The damaged buses were replaced by other vehicles, but Mr Gilligan says the attack has "knocked passenger confidence".

    "It also results in extra expenditure for us when we've seen a massive drop in revenue and it worries our staff, who are going out there and working in a difficult time," he added.

    A blaze at a mobile phone mast in Huddersfield this morning put lives at risk and destroyed vital communications equipment used by the emergency services, West Yorkshire Fire Service says.

    The "significant" fire, involving a mast at Fearnleys Mill, started at about 01:40 and posed a risk to occupants of 37 flats in the four-storey building, according to the fire service.

    A total of six fire crews - about 25 firefighters - were called out to tackle the blaze.

    As well as destroying kit belonging to the emergency services, the fire also damaged equipment used by three mobile phone network providers, the fire service said.

    A senior South Yorkshire police officer has thanked people across the county for staying at home over the Easter bank holiday as the coronavirus lockdown continues.

    Supt Paul McCurry (pictured) said a “big thank you” after a long weekend of enhanced police patrols was met with "largely desolate streets, parks and roads" across the county.

    He said: "The overwhelming response from the public remains positive and we've only moved to enforcement on a very small number of occasions."

    Officers spent Easter conducting targeted patrols and responding to any reports of suspected Covid-19 restriction breaches, the force said.

    A total of 24 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued by South Yorkshire officers between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, most commonly in response to non-essential travel, it added.

    A 99-year-old army veteran who has joined the fundraising fight against Covid-19 has "smashed" his £500,000 target.

    Tom Moore, who was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, aims to complete 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden by Thursday, walking with the aid of a frame.

    He originally hoped to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together to thank "magnificent" staff after recent treatment for a broken hip and cancer.

    He said: "Who would have thought that when I set a target of £1,000 a week ago, it could have reached £500,000?"

    Mr Moore's daughter, Hannah, said when she told him he had reached £500,000 "there was stunned silence".

    "We are completely floored by the amount of support flooding in - it's just incredible and he is smashing his target," she said.

    The Mayor of Harrogate says he hopes the town's Nightingale Hospital is "a huge waste of money".

    It was assembled in days inside the town's Convention Centre and has 500 beds ready for coronavirus patients.

    Stuart Martin said: "Wouldn't it be great if it wasn't used at all and all the beds remained empty? That would be a success really.

    "Even though they've probably spent millions to get it ready, wouldn't it be nice if in six months time we were talking about what a waste of money it was?"

    A similar emergency field hospital built at London's ExCel centre opened on 3 April and other facilities are due to open in Birmingham and Bristol.

    NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens said: "We're giving the go-ahead to these additional sites, hoping they may not be needed, but preparing in case they are."
