Measures to tackle the large number of people congregating at an Ilkley riverside are being considered by Bradford Council, amid fears the town could see "at least four months of fairly intensive visitor numbers".

    Ilkley riverside

It comes after hundreds of visitors have came to the town in warm weather over the weekend and on Monday, some of whom appeared to be ignoring social distancing guidelines as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Setting up car parking facilities, installing temporary toilets and larger bins and engaging with young people are all moves being considered by the council to help ease the situation.

The town's swing bridge could also be closed as a way of stopping people jumping off into the shallow water below.

Speaking at a virtual Ilkley Town Council meeting, Bradford Council ward officer Sue Gledhill said: "It cannot all be about enforcement but, having said that, there are measures we can put in place."

The completion of the final pass on the River Don marks the end of a 20-year vision to have a fully joined-up river from the North Sea to spawning grounds in the centre of Sheffield and upstream.

The construction on Masbrough Weir, at Forge Island in Rotherham, was the last of 18 obstructions to be made passable to allow salmon to move freely up and down the river.

Anthony Downing, Environment Agency catchment co-ordinator for the Don and Rother, said: "It is very exciting that this month we will see the completion of the fish pass at Forge Island.

"With Sheffield City Council also finishing the fish pass on Sanderson's Weir, this will open the entire migratory route from the North Sea to spawning grounds upstream of Sheffield.

"The work to open up the route has been a great partnership effort involving many organisations to enable fish passage at 18 previously unpassable weirs, and hopefully we will now see a sustainable salmon population in the River Don after an absence of around 200 years."

Joyce Richardson, from Thirsk, who nearly lost the use of her legs after developing sepsis last year, set herself the challenge of standing up 100 times before her birthday today to raise money for Herriot Hospice Homecare.

She said: "It may not seem much to most people but, believe you me, hauling myself up out of the chair is a huge struggle every time."

Mrs Richardson, who managed 105 stand-ups, set out to raise £1,000 for the charity, but donations to her JustGiving page now total £16,873 and the charity says with money sent inside cards, the total is almost £18,000.

Her eldest son Gill, 74, was cared for by the charity before his death in October last year.

She said: "Thanks to everybody who's given to the cause, it's absolutely wonderful.

"When I started it I thought if I raised £1,000 I would do very well, but I'm absolutely amazed how generous people have been."

Police data obtained by the RAC revealed the car was clocked at 151mph on the M62 motorway.

The next fastest recorded speed was 140mph on the A14 in Suffolk.

RAC road safety spokesman Simon Williams described the speeds as "truly shocking" and warned that motorists travelling this fast have "virtually no time to react should anything unexpected happen".

He went on: "Some drivers have taken advantage of quieter roads to speed excessively, putting the lives of others at risk at the worst possible time."

Department for Transport figures show traffic was two-thirds lower than normal for the first few weeks after the lockdown was introduced on 23 March, when people were urged to stay home and avoid non-essential travel.

"Some people have to send their kids back to school and they are doing so with a lot of anxiety," Ms Kundu said.

"I am not going to send them back until I can see a testing and tracing system in place that is working.

"Once testing doesn’t take so long and we know a true regional picture, then I will be happy to send them back."

In one instance, a car driver was clocked at 59mph in a 30mph residential area in Boroughbridge.

In another, a motorcyclist was recorded travelling at 55mph in a 30mph area at Horton in Ribblesdale.

North Yorkshire Police says its officers also dealt with 54 collisions this weekend, some of which included serious injuries.

In a two-hour period on the A66 in Richmondshire, 153 motoring offences were detected, say police.

  20. School 'will not close' despite positive Covid-19 testpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 1 June 2020

A school in Sheffield has confirmed it will not close despite a staff member there testing positive for Covid-19.

    Phillimore PrimaryImage source, Google

An email to staff at Phillimore Primary School in Darnall said following guidance from the Department for Education, they did not need to self-isolate for 14 days and that the school would remain open.

This was because the staff member tested positive before half term and the school has since been deep-cleaned, the school said.

The GMB Union said it still had "major concerns".

Head teacher Gillian Briggs said: "Unfortunately, a member of staff has tested positive for coronavirus, thankfully they are recovering well.

"The member of staff was in school Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week. If you were in school on either of these days, please be vigilant of the symptoms for Covid-10. You do not need to self-isolate."
