Officers were called just after midnight on Saturday to Hull Road at Grimston Bar, near York, where a deer had been hit by a vehicle, leaving it with broken legs.

The previous day, officers came across a deer at the side of the road at Burton Salmon, near Selby, which had also suffered broken legs.

In a three-day period during the week before, four other deer were found injured and "clearly suffering" in Hambleton, Ryedale, Harrogate and Selby.

In all these cases, the animals' injuries were so severe they were "not survivable", the force adds.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “It’s possible wildlife has become used to quieter roads due to coronavirus restrictions. As traffic increases, please take extra care.

“The highest risk times are from sunset to midnight, and the hours just before and after sunrise. Collisions also tend to peak around this time of year, as deer travel in search of new territories."

Anyone who sees an injured animal in the road is asked to pull over at the next safe place and call the police on 101 - or on 999 if the situation means lives could be at risk.

Lewis Howlett, 25, who taught at The Farnley Academy, had been swimming with a group of friends in the River Aire on Saturday at about 20:30 in Kirkstall when they noticed he was missing.

His body was found the following morning after a search by emergency services.

Det Insp James Entwistle said: "This is an absolutely tragic loss of the life of a young man, and his family and friends have been left completely devastated.

"Although we are still working to establish the full circumstances of this incident to assist the coroner, his death does appear to starkly illustrate the dangers of swimming in open water."

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s District Commander for Leeds, Andy Farrell, said: "With the recent good weather it’s tempting to go for a swim in rivers, lakes or reservoirs but you can quickly get into trouble with devastating consequences.

"We urge people to be extremely vigilant around open water. Even if you consider yourself to be a strong swimmer, you can suddenly get out of your depth or be taken unawares by hidden undercurrents or cold water shock."

Mr Howlett's death came on the same day a 12-year-old girl was taken to hospital after getting into difficulty while swimming in Ardsley Reservoir, Leeds on Saturday morning, police say.

It was announced on Friday that the outdoor market would be back in business from today, with additional social distancing measures in place as the lockdown is eased.

Outdoor traders’ representative Lisa Stebbings said while she was glad the outdoor market was fully open again, many stallholders will need further help from the council.

She said: "We have winter stock we need to get rid of, probably at a loss, because nobody wants to buy zip-up hoodies in the summer.

“We need to call on the council to do their bit – they should be helping the traders get back on their feet.”

And trader Shaul Dolan says the past few weeks have seen takings reduce by about 80%.

"A lot of our customers are older. If you’re only allowing a certain number of people onto a bus, people won’t be coming into Leeds as much. I know the virus is dangerous, but we can’t do this forever."

A Leeds City Council spokesman said: "The immediate priority of markets staff during the last week has been to make sure that Kirkgate’s outdoor market can open safely.

"Once we have reopened, we will be in a better position to discuss what further support we will be able to provide to traders."

They say efforts to repair the economy should support the government's commitment to tackle the climate change crisis.

They believe ministers should use the Covid-19 lockdown as a springboard to propel a green economy.

The signatories to the letter include Lloyds Bank, Asda, Siemens and Sky.

The proposals outlined by firms such as Mitsubishi, Signify and Yorkshire Water in a letter to the prime minister include:

    • Driving investment in low carbon innovation, infrastructure and industries.
    • Focusing support on sectors that can best support the environment, increase job creation and foster the recovery - whilst also decarbonising the economy.
    • Putting strings on financial support to ensure firms getting bailout cash are well managed, and in step with climate goals.

In a speech on Thursday Boris Johnson briefly committed himself in principle to the so-called Green New Deal slogan "Building Back Better" for a more resilient society.

And there are rumours that the Treasury is planning cash for labour-intensive home insulation, and further investment in electric vehicles.

As pupils begin to return to some primary schools across England, the leader of Barnsley Council has warned about the possibility of a "Covid-19 lost generation".

    Please wait until clear sign

From today, children in Reception, Years 1 and 6 are finally able to return after having been out of school for 10 weeks - though some schools have said they are not ready, while in other areas they will remain shut.

He said: "Clearly for us, we are keen to get children back to school because what we don't want is a Covid-19 lost generation of children who did not get the education they deserve.
