French food giant Danone announced it was buying a majority stake in the North Yorkshire-based firm in February.

But the deal was subject to an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) which examined if it would mean a “substantial lessening of competition” within the market.

The CMA has now confirmed it will not be referring the planned acquisition to a further investigation.

The deal – made for an undisclosed sum – will see Harrogate Spring Water join the Evian and Volvic brands under Danone’s portfolio.

Harrogate Spring Water first started bottling its spa water in 1740 and was originally set up with help from Harrogate Borough Council to increase the profile of the town.

The water company achieved sales of £21.6m in the financial year to March 2019.

  20. 'All options on table' in Leeds statues reviewpublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 11 June 2020

The woman leading a new review of statues in Leeds says she's keen to hear the views of people in the city.

Leeds City Council announced yesterday that all statues of historic figures in the city will be subject to review.

The move came after a statue of Queen Victoria in the Hyde Park area of the city was sprayed with graffiti including the words "murderer" and "slave owner" (pictured).

On Sunday, a statue of 17th Century slave trader Edward Colston was torn off its plinth in Bristol by protesters, prompting calls for statues of other figures with links to slavery and imperialism in the UK to be removed.

Yesterday, Andrea Jenkyns, Conservative MP for Morley and Outwood, questioned the decision to spend taxpayers' money on the review in Leeds, before adding: "You cannot erase history, only learn the lessons from it."

The review in Leeds is being led by Alison Lowe, who was the city's first black female councillor, and who is now chief executive of the Touchstone mental health charity.

Ms Lowe says "all options are on the table".

She says: "I haven't said any statues will come down. I've said they could do - they might not.

"There might be some statues which there is debate around and we might decide to modify some of the wording, but it doesn't mean that statue will go.

"Having said that, the outcome of the consultation with the majority of people might be that that's what they want," she added.
