  6. North of England dominates top 10 for new infectionspublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 2 July 2020

    Daniel Wainwright
    BBC England Data Unit

After Leicester, parts of Yorkshire and the north-west of England have recorded the highest rates of new coronavirus infections, according to new data.

However, all but two of the top 10 areas for rates of infection in the week ending 28 June saw a fall compared with the week before, Public Health England reported.

Leicester, however, remains far ahead of the others, with three times as many new cases per 100,000 people as Bradford.

Bedford, the only top 10 place other than Leicester not in the north, has seen its rate of new cases fall by half in a week.

The new data combines two sets of coronavirus tests - those done in hospitals and involving care workers and previously unpublished local figures on tests outside of hospitals.

Some rules have been relaxed from Saturday around which places are allowed to reopen, so long as they follow social distancing guidelines.

Many pubs and restaurants have said they'll have extra cleaning in place, along with lower capacities and time limits on tables to ensure people are kept safe.

North Yorkshire Police is asking people to enjoy themselves if they choose to go out this weekend, but to remember "the sacrifices that were made to get us to this point".

Assistant Ch Con Mike Walker, said: "Firstly, my thanks go to everyone who has stayed at home and allowed us to get to the stage where we can see our communities come back to life, albeit still with some restrictions.

"We understand it has been difficult for many people, both in terms of health concerns and economic concerns. As we see our high streets, communities and now licensed venues open up again, we urge people to drink responsibly and respect local residents and their peace and quiet.

"Licensees have had a very difficult few months, please don’t make things worse for your favourite pub or bar by risking their licence through anti-social behaviour or worse."

Patrols are to be stepped up this weekend to catch people who decide to drink and drive, the force added.

  14. Sheffield gig venues 'at risk' of permanent closurepublished at 08:01 British Summer Time 2 July 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Three major music venues in Sheffield are at risk of closing for good due to the coronavirus unless the government gives an immediate cash injection to save them, a charity claims.

    Leadmill

The Leadmill (pictured), Corporation and Abbeydale Picture House have been put on the "at risk" register by the Music Venue Trust, which represents hundreds of grassroots venues.

The Leadmill has warned the entire arts sector is "on a cliff edge" and says it has zero income coming in.

Meanwhile, Corporation hasn’t been able to claim any grants and also has no income.

Both venues have furloughed staff, but owners say they don't know how they'll top up wages once the scheme ends in August - and both say it will be before any live acts can return.

The Music Venue Trust says 90% of venues and festivals face permanent closure and has issued an urgent warning that £50m is needed to prevent mass closures in coming months.

The trust says the coronavirus lockdown means a rescue package is fundamental to the survival of a large number of venues.

In addition, it’s proposing a one-off cut in VAT on ticket sales for the next three years for venues and promoters.

Chief executive Mark Dayvd says: "When we eventually emerge from lockdown, grassroots music venues, the absolute bedrock on which our world-beating £5.2bn per year industry has been built, are going to be essential to live music bouncing back."
