The Grade II-listed Old Coach House, in Hillsborough Park, next to the library, is set for redevelopment, along with the nearby Potting Shed.

The abandoned coach house was last used as a munitions store during World War Two and will become a cafe run by an operator in the city.

Meanwhile, the Potting Shed will become a space for gardening, woodwork, metalwork, art, photography and other crafts.

The £1m plans have been about three years in the making and construction is set to begin on site in autumn this year - with the aim of opening the cafe next summer.

After a £631,200 National Lottery Heritage Fund award, £20,000 secured in partner funding and £100,000 from Age UK itself, the charity is now hoping to raise the rest of the money needed with the support of the community.

Scaffolding will be erected around Skidby Mill from Monday to allow contractors to carry out repairs to the roof and windows and to repaint the 75ft (22m) structure.

The mill sails have already been removed and send for repair by a specialist millwright. It is hoped they will be returned in early 2021.

Paul Kilvington, from East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Skidby Mill is a much loved local feature, and as a council, we are committed to maintaining the structure. Works of this nature are required to keep its fabric in good condition.

"The erection of the scaffolding means that it is not possible to reopen Skidby Mill yet, but further details of a reopening date will be issued as soon as possible."

Grand Central will restart journeys on its West Yorkshire and North East routes from 26 July.

The restart will see two daily return services between Bradford Interchange and King's Cross and a further three daily return services between Sunderland and King's Cross.

Because the Yorkshire-based company is an open access operator, it does not benefit from government support.

The Department for Transport launched a package of support for franchised operators to keep their services running, after lockdown began.

Poverty left some struggling to afford products and schools and community centres that distribute them have shut.

Leeds-based Freedom4Girls said it had seen an even-larger five-fold increase in the number of free sanitary products it supplied in and around the city.

Tina Leslie, who runs the charity, said it normally delivered about 500 packs of pads, tampons and liners a month. But since the start of lockdown it had distributed more than 7,500 packs.

"If you can't manage your periods your emotional mental health is just plummeting," she said.

"Corona has exacerbated the issue over lockdown. Community centres weren't open, schools were closed."

The government said its scheme launched in January to give out free period products in schools was still in operation.

  18. Flood-hit Fishlake shows lockdown resiliencepublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 30 June 2020

There are calls for work to prevent further flooding in a South Yorkshire village to resume as soon as possible following the easing of coronavirus lockdown measures.

    FishlakeImage source, PA Media

Peter Pridham, church warden in Fishlake, says work to stop a repeat of the scenes of flooding in November 2019, is needed urgently following the disruption of the coronavirus crisis.

He says: "It's most unfortunate the two things have coincided."

The Environment Agency says site visits to Fishlake have now recommenced in line with government advice.

A spokesperson said: "Residents will see our staff and contractors gathering additional information through land surveys, ground investigations and inspections to inform work to improve flood defences."

Over the last fortnight, villagers in Fishlake have seen an increase in work to repair damaged properties which had been put on hold due to lockdown.

However, some people in the village are still struggling to claim on insurance.

    Pam Webb

Pam Webb is hoping to reopen her spa business in August, although she has yet to receive any guidance from the government.

She says: "As I'm sure was evident during the aftermath of the floods, the people of Fishlake are very resilient and we try to support each other.

"That being said, it is clearly difficult to deal with two significant events so close to each other. Mentally, physically and financially it takes its toll."
