The 300-plus play areas across the borough were all closed during the coronavirus lockdown.

However, alongside pubs, restaurants and hairdressers in England, they will be allowed to re-open at the weekend as part of the easing of lockdown restrictions.

But users will have to stick to Covid-19 guidelines and the 1m-plus proximity rule.

Councillor Rob Walker said the council was taking “a measured approach” to re-opening facilities, in order to make sure it was done at the safest and most appropriate time.

He added: "We have to put safety first. In line with government advice, we are now working towards re-opening equipped play areas on 4 July.

"In the meantime our parks and open spaces are open for everyone to enjoy."

The team's Hawk jets were flown over the Army's Catterick Garrison, RAF Leeming and the town of Scarborough.

In March, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says it saw a "huge" spike in garden-related fires as people burned waste because recycling centres had been closed down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Firefighters asked people to pledge they wouldn't have fires during the ongoing pandemic - and over 1,000 people signed up.

Simon Dunker, head of the joint police and fire community safety team, said: "On behalf of the service, I’d like to say a huge thank you to the public for taking on board our messaging – supporting us and their neighbours."

In total, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews were called out to 533 incidents during April and May, less than in 2019 and 2017 during "similarly dry springs".

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) runs between Pickering and Whitby, with one of its stations famously featuring as Hogsmeade in a Harry Potter film.

It will reopen on 1 August, which is also Yorkshire Day, with journeys running seven days a week.

Measures will be in place to enable social distancing to be maintained.

These will include passengers being able to pre-book tickets, with each train carriage being cleaned and sanitised before each journey.

Onboard toilets will not be in use but there will be facilities on the platforms, NYMR said.

There will be four return departures daily from Pickering to Levisham, and from Grosmont to Goathland return, with each journey lasting about one hour.

The county, under Sheffield City Region mayor Dan Jarvis, will have new powers and receive about £30m from Whitehall.

Local Government Minister Simon Clarke said the deal would "unlock real benefits for people across South Yorkshire".

Mr Jarvis said it would bring "significant transformations" across the county.

He added: "We have to make the most of the benefits devolution has to offer."

The order for the deal will be laid in Parliament after letters of agreement were submitted by the mayor and council leaders in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The deal is set to be approved and then the devolved money will be available, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The mayor will have power over transport, strategic planning and skills in the region, plus £900m over 30 years.

Hull City Council and Humberside Police are urging visitors to the city centre to act responsibly and adhere to social distancing rules.

Public health messages are also being put up across the city.

Many shops, pubs and restaurants closed in March as restrictions were placed on people because of the pandemic.

But now, as lockdown restrictions are eased, some pubs and bars are reopening from Saturday with social distancing measures in place.

Ch Supt Darren Downs said: "We will have additional officers out in the city centre to help keep everyone safe and make sure that as the restrictions are eased and more people head out to socialise together it’s an enjoyable occasion for all.

"The vast majority of people in this area have been really good at adhering to the guidelines that have been put in place to limit the spread of Covid-19 and I believe that people will continue to behave responsibly as the restrictions are eased."

  8. Tonnes of rubbish cleared each day from Sheffield parkpublished at 12:33 British Summer Time 29 June 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Litter pickers removed over four tonnes of rubbish every day from around a popular Sheffield park after people flocked to it during the recent heatwave, it's been revealed.

    Rubbish in the park

Sheffield Council and its contractors Amey and Veolia cleared the litter from Endcliffe Park and the Porter Valley.

Local residents complained after hundreds of people visited the park during last week’s hot weather and left mounds of rubbish.

The council said its teams had cleared bins every few hours, but photos on social media showed huge amounts of litter being left by revellers.

Extra police patrols were called in to help deal with the littering and anti-social behaviour at the park.

  9. Second care home due to close in Scarboroughpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 29 June 2020

A second care home in Scarborough will close within days after officials expressed concerns about the standard of care being offered to residents.

    Elsinor Residential Home, Scarborough

Elsinor Residential Home is run by the same company which ran Grosvenor House, also in Scarborough.

The owner closed that home on 18 June over concerns about the quality of care offered.

At the time, North Yorkshire County Council and the Care Quality Commission health watchdog said they were also carrying out a review of the Elsinor home.

That review has resulted in the decision to close the home this week.

Richard Webb, North Yorkshire's director for health and adult services, said the coronavirus pandemic had presented a challenge to the entire care sector.

"Some homes have coped amazingly well, some have needed support and some just haven't been able to deliver - and that's why we have had to intervene here."

The council's social services team says it will work with residents and their families to find alternative care.

The home's owners declined to comment.

Part of the firm's network will run again for the first time on 3 July, a day before tourist attractions are allowed to welcome back holidaymakers.

Megabus, which suspended operations in April, will restart routes serving Leeds, Sheffield, London, Bristol, Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham and Norwich.

Social distancing measures will mean there will be reduced capacity, the firm said.

Enhanced cleaning and anti-bacterial stations on board will all be part of the new service, it added.

Drivers will be given masks, visors and gloves, there will be increased filter changing on air conditioning units, and coaches will be deep cleaned before going back on the road, Megabus said.

The female was found on a road over the River Hull, soaking wet and bedraggled, and was taken to a Hull animal hospital who then called the animal charity.

She was at first thought to be a juvenile sparrow hawk, but RSPCA officer Leanne Honess-Heather said she was surprised to see the “pretty hefty” Peregrine falcon weighing in at 865g, despite only being about three months old.

“It’s hard to imagine that such a big bird - more than 1ft tall with around a 2ft wingspan - could still be just a fledgling!”, she said.

It is thought the bird got blown off course in the strong winds and had become grounded in an “awkward spot”.

She spent a few days in observation before being ringed and released.

The RSPCA said it was a “happy ending” for such a beautiful bird.
