    Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene of a large blaze at a recycling plant for "some time", South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue say.

    Dozens of firefighters have been tackling the blaze at the site on Brookfields Way in Wath-Upon-Dearne, Rotherham, since 04:30 BST

    The fire service says it is now "surrounded" and a huge smoke plume has "massively reduced" but says it expects firefighters to be there "for some time longer whilst we ensure this fire is fully extinguished".

    It says people living nearby are now free to open windows and doors.

    A fire on an industrial estate near Rotherham is now "surrounded" and a huge smoke plume has "massively reduced", according to South Yorkshire Fire Service.

    About 30 firefighters are at the scene which started at about 04:30 this morning on Brookfields Way in Wath-Upon-Dearne, the fire service said.

    Residents are being advised by officers it is now safe to open windows and doors.

    Fire crews are at the site of a big blaze on an industrial estate near Rotherham which started in the early hours of this morning.

    About 30 firefighters are tackling the fire on Brookfields Way, in Wath-Upon-Dearne, the fire service said.

    There's a large amount of thick smoke in the area and people living nearby and those in Mexborough, are advised to keep windows and doors closed.

    Plans to increase the number of rail services to Birmingham International and Coventry along with new direct services to the West Midlands have been submitted to the government.

    The proposals from regional transport lobby group Midlands Connect , externalcould cost up to £180m and it says construction could begin as early as 2024 if ministers approve them.

    The scheme would include the first direct services to northern cities such as Sheffield and Durham and a doubling of services to Birmingham International and Coventry from places such as Leamington Spa and Reading.

    The lobby group said the improvements would come from double tracking sections of the existing railway and using additional capacity created by the HS2 rail project.

    A three-mile pipe set to supply up to a quarter of Britain's gas has been installed in a tunnel buried deep under the River Humber.

    The pipeline is replacing an old main which became exposed on the bed of the River Humber.

    The new pipe will carry gas 30m below the surface when it is connected to the rest of the network later this year.

    It was pushed into place using hydraulics, meaning the project created "world’s longest hydraulically inserted pipe", National Grid said.

    The new pipeline will run between Paull, East Yorkshire on the north bank and Goxhill, northern Lincolnshire on the south bank.

    Performances of Les Miserables at Hull New Theatre have been postponed until next year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    The event, which should have taken place in October, will now take place in August 2021 instead.

    Tickets will remain valid for the new run from 25 August 2021 until 18 September 2021, the theatre said.

    The crash happened at about 11:35 at the junction of Barnsley Road and School Street, in Cudworth.

    South Yorkshire Police say the driver of the vehicle has been arrested in connection with the incident and taken to hospital "as a precaution".

    Buzz Bingo has announced plans to close its Bridlington bingo hall and 25 others as part of restructuring plans aimed at securing the long-term future of the business.

    The company, which employs around 3,400 people, said it has earmarked sites for closure due to what it "expects will be an unsustainable operating environment for the foreseeable future".

    The proposed closures will put about 573 jobs at risk.

    Chris Matthews, chief executive of Buzz Bingo, said: "The ongoing pandemic has had far-reaching consequences for the entire leisure and hospitality sector and an immediate and significant impact on our business.

    "The restructure will, very sadly, impact a number of our colleagues and my priority is to support all those affected and keep them fully informed as we continue with this process."

    Barnsley Council says it will give away 25,000 free face masks to residents after the government said wearing one in shops and supermarkets will become mandatory later this month.

    From 24 July those who fail to comply with the new rules will face a fine of up to £100.

    The Labour-run authority said the reusable face coverings will be distributed in public places across the borough,

    Council leader Sir Steve Houghton said: "Keeping our communities safe is our top priority.

    "It also really demonstrates our borough's Barnsley spirit. When I see someone wearing a face covering on public transport, when visiting our high streets, the markets or when they begin to use our services and healthcare settings, it's a visual representation of our solidarity to protect our communities."

    Luxury fashion firm Burberry has announced plans to axe about 500 jobs globally as it looks to cut annual costs.

    About 150 office jobs are set to be cut in the UK and a further 350 overseas.

    The firm says it must save an additional £55 million on top of the £140m previously announced.

    The details came as Burberry revealed comparable retail sales plunged 45% in the three months to June 27 due to the coronavirus lockdown closing stores and amid travel restrictions worldwide.

    Burberry says it is also looking to axe some office space as home working has proved successful amid lockdowns worldwide.

    The group did not say how many offices would go or where, but confirmed it would keep its Horseferry Road HQ in London and its Leeds site.

    It also stressed UK retail and manufacturing jobs would not be affected by the latest cost-cutting plans.

  15. Council announces increase in numbers allowed at funeralspublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 15 July 2020

    Up to 25 people will now be allowed to attend funerals in Sheffield following further relaxing of government restrictions.

    The changes, which apply to both chapel and graveside services, came in to effect from Monday. Previosuly only 10 mourners were permitted.

    Sheffield City Council said other bereavement services have also resumed, including the burial of ashes, scattering of ashes and burial services in chapels.

    Mourners attending a funeral service can be from different households, but where this is the case the two metre social distance rule must be adhered to.

    For those who are unable to attend, Hutcliffe Wood and City Road chapels will continue to offer a live webcast of the funeral service free of charge.

    A woman and a 14-year-old girl have been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a teenage girl in Shipley.

    The 16-year-old victim was one of three females involved in an argument on Monday, 13 July in Carnegie Park.

    She suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged.

    West Yorkshire Police say the 14-year-old girl and a 48-year-old woman were arrested this morning in connection with the attack

    Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information about what happened to come forward.
