Amy-Leanne Stringfellow, 26, from Balby, died in June after being found fatally injured at a house on Dryden Road.

Terence Papworth, 45, formerly of Dryden Road, has been charged with her murder and is due to appear in court in November.

Following a referral from South Yorkshire Police, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it was to look into the contact the force had between Ms Stringfellow and Mr Papworth in the days leading up to her death.

IOPC regional director Miranda Biddle said: “This is a tragic case where a young woman sadly lost her life and my thoughts are with her family.

“We will be considering the force’s response to incidents reported to them prior to Amy-Leanne’s death and whether there is any learning that can be identified.

“We have contacted Amy-Leanne’s family to explain our role and we will be keeping them regularly updated as our inquiries progress.”

The Polar Bear and The Welly were shut last week after two companies owned by VMS Live went into administration, with the risk of 20 job losses.

It followed four months of forced closure because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But Chris Sherrington, from the Music Venue Alliance, has told BBC Radio Humberside there is a chance the venues could be saved.

He said: "At the moment, there have been investors who are interested, but the key thing is seeing what the administrators [do] and how they want to take it forward, because it's kind of in their ball park at the moment."

  5. Job loss threat as Sheffield theatres stay closedpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 21 July 2020

Almost a third of jobs at Sheffield Theatres are at risk following the group's announcement its venues won't now fully reopen their doors until next spring because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The group, which runs the Crucible and the Lyceum in Sheffield, says it will only run a "pop-up" season this year, with activity and audiences being massively reduced.

Social distancing and rules around the coronavirus means it anticipates it will only have 57% of its audiences back in the next financial year, leading to a drop in income.

Because of this, a consultation has been launched looking at making 72 staff members redundant.

Dan Bates, Sheffield Theatres chief executive, said: "We don’t know when we will be able to return to the same levels of activity in our theatres. We know we can’t expect to see audiences returning to pre-pandemic levels for quite some time.

"I am heartbroken this means we won’t have as much work for people and therefore we have to reduce our staffing levels. We're entering into consultation with our team and we're considering proposals which include all staff reducing their hours of work as well as potential redundancies."

The government has said that socially-distanced audiences might be able to return from August, but Sheffield Theatres said that wouldn't be financially viable for the group.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side clinched the Championship title over the weekend, meaning a return to the top flight of English football after a 16-year absence and a first piece of silverware in 28 years.

The promotion and subsequent title win sparked wild celebrations at both Elland Road and Millennium Square over the weekend (pictured above).

But the council says while the title win will be celebrated "as soon as it is safe to do so", it is currently impossible to organise due to it being unclear when the coronavirus pandemic will end.

A council spokesman said: “We're delighted with Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League and disappointed the current situation with coronavirus means a city-wide event is simply not possible at this time.

"We would like to reassure fans that, as soon as it is safe to do so, Leeds United’s promotion will be marked in a way which recognises the team’s fantastic achievement, which will include a civic reception."

  9. 'Golden ticket' event as fans return to snookerpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 21 July 2020

The return of fans to the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield as coronavirus restrictions are eased will be a "golden ticket" event, according to the competition's chairman.

Last week, the government said a number of pilot events would take place with a limited amount of supporters being allowed in venues, observing social distancing rules.

It comes after many competitive sports were stopped in March due to the pandemic.

The snooker championship, which has been delayed, is one of the pilot events that will see some fans return to the Crucible in Sheffield to watch the event.

Chairman Barry Hearn said he was "delighted" the event was picked to be a pilot and will be the only indoor sporting event with a crowd.

He said: "This is marvellous news for the small number of spectators lucky enough to have kept their tickets for what will be a unique occasion at the Crucible.

"Every single one who chose the option to keep their seat for this year will be given a place. And the limited number of tickets on general sale will be snapped up quickly by fans who now have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this world famous event live.

“This really will be a golden ticket. We hope this event will never again be staged under these circumstances. But on this occasion, it will make the experience even more unique and special.

"And fans can rest assured that every health and safety guideline provided by the government will be followed," he added.

Those not lucky enough to have secured their seat will get the chance to buy a small number of general sale tickets. Otherwise, there will be full coverage on BBC Sport.

Lewis Bagshaw, 21, died in hospital after being stabbed twice in the chest on Piper Crescent, Southey, in Sheffield, on 21 July last year.

Emar Wiley (pictured above), 17, of Mason Lathe Road, Sheffield, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown court yesterday.

He can be named after reporting restrictions were lifted at the court following an application from the Sheffield Star newspaper.

The fatal attack on Mr Bagshaw (pictured above) stemmed from an incident in May 2019 when Wiley, who started drug-dealing at 13, fractured Mr Bagshaw's father's skull in a row about £200 of crack cocaine.

After being stabbed, Mr Bagshaw ran into a nearby garden to get help, but was pronounced dead in hospital an hour later, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Mr Bagshaw's grandmother, Pauline Bagshaw, said: “There are no words to describe the pain me and my family are going through, not just now but for the rest of our lives.

“One day the person who killed Lewis will walk free but we will be forever heartbroken. We are all deeply suffering and our lives will never be the same again.”

Det Ch Insp Jude Ashmore, from South Yorkshire Police, said: “Through a single, senseless, act of violence, Emar Wiley has ruined so many lives, including his own. He has robbed a much-loved young man of his future, and a child of a life with his dad."

Holmfirth artist Gail Dooley's Tidal Shame is the third piece to take up a year-long residence outside Liverpool Parish Church.

It depicts a gannet tangled in plastic waste collected on Merseyside and Guernsey beaches during lockdown.

The artist said the piece was about humans "trashing the planet".

"I hope that when people see it, they are shocked, because it is shocking," she said.

"The sculpture is my response to the shocking levels of global marine pollution [made from] a load of rubbish that's been collected on Liverpool and Guernsey beaches.

"This is my way of doing something, because I feel very hopeless about the situation."
