    The new restrictions in Bradford, Kirklees and Calderdale have now been given legal power thanks to new documents published today.

    The new laws, external, which come in to force from Wednesday, allow West Yorkshire Police to issue £100 fines to people who break the rules which were brought in last week.

    The fines also double each time someone breaks the rules up to a huge £3,200.

    Details are also out of some of the exemptions.

    These range from matters of life and death - allowing midwives to enter homes to help with births and also allowing family and friends to say goodbye to dying relatives - to the more unusual - for example Olympic and Paralympic athletes in the areas can still train with a coach.

    We also know now that a houseboat counts as a house for the purposes of the rules.

    Although concerns still remain about how likely it is that West Yorkshire Police will be able to enforce the rules in practice.

    They have until the law is reviewed by the 19 August to try and work it out.

    Five people have been arrested on suspicion of being part of a gang which forced children to sell drugs in Grimsby.

    Humberside Police say three men and a woman aged between 25 and 34-years-old were arrested following raids in Grimsby, Leeds and Bradford while a fourth man, aged 32, handed himself in to police in Bradford

    All five people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply cocaine and heroin and an offence under the modern day slavery act.

    Det Ch Insp Phil Booker said: "Today’s action is the result of a long-term investigation led by Humberside Police into the supply of Class A drugs in Grimsby and the exploitation of children.

    “Thanks to the work of Humberside team, working alongside colleagues in the Regional Organised Crime Unit, five people are now in custody and we’re continuing to question them about their potential involvement in not only bringing heroin and crack cocaine into our area but also about forcing children into dealing drugs for them.

    “This is a form of modern day slavery and it’s not something that we are prepared to tolerate in this area."

    An artist from Leeds known as Burley Banksy says he is "done with street art" after a memorial he helped to create in Headingley was vandalised.

    Andy McVeigh said the artwork dedicated to Frightened Rabbit singer Scott Hutchison, who took his own life, had been repeatedly targeted.

    He said many of his other works in his local area around Kirkstall and Burley had also been vandalised.

    "I physically haven't got the time or emotional energy to continue," he said.

    "For every one that I do, which can take a whole day, I probably spend twice that trying to repair them.

    Five men have been arrested in connection with allegations of child sexual abuse relating to four girls in Rotherham.

    The offences are alleged to have taken place about 20 years ago, when the girls were aged between 11 and 16.

    National Crime Agency officers working as part of Operation Stovewood made the arrests over the course of three days last week.

    Four of the men live in Rotherham, while the fifth lives in Leeds.

    The men, aged between 38 and 50, were questioned by police then released while investigations continue.

    Wakefield's Theatre Royal will not re-open for live performances until Spring 2021, it's been announced.

    Bosses at the Drury Lane venue say they have made the decision due to the ongoing uncertainty over when public performances will be able to resume in England.

    Katie Town, the theatre's Executive Director said: "Like many other theatres, Theatre Royal Wakefield relies heavily on the income from Pantomime and associated activities during the festive season.

    "However, given we still have no clear idea when we'll be able to re-open for public performances, and the fact the process for accessing the £1.57bn of emergency funding for the arts has only just been unveiled, we feel the risk of proceeding at this stage is too high."

    The theatre says most of the autumn programme, including the pantomime, has been rescheduled to 2021 and customers with tickets booked for shows in 2020 will be contacted about dates for their performances.

    A man's "romantic" marriage proposal didn't quite go to plan when he accidentally set fire to his Sheffield flat.

    After lighting "hundreds" of tealights and filling the room with balloons he went to collect his girlfriend for the "big moment".

    But when the couple returned to the flat they found it engulfed in flames.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue (SYFR) said three fire crews were sent to the scene on Abbeydale Road at about 20:30 on Monday to put out the blaze.

    A spokesperson said nobody was injured, before adding that "as a bonus, she said YES!"

    Posting on Twitter, external SYFR said: "As romantic as they are, and as much as we all love 'em, candles can be SO dangerous."

    The service urged people never to leave candles unattended.

    Six police officers were assaulted, including being "bitten and hit", while on duty in four separate incidents over the weekend in East Yorkshire.

    Three of the attacks happened in Bridlington and a fourth in Hull, say police.

    In one of the incidents an officer suffered a dislocated knuckle after trying to stop a suspect, arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse, from repeatedly banging his head on the metal in the police van.

    Deputy Chief Constable Chris Rowley said: “Over the course of this weekend our officers have been bitten, hit in the face and assaulted.

    “Our staff come to work to protect people and keep you safe and I want to make it absolutely clear that we will not tolerate them being attacked just for doing their job.”

    Four men have been arrested in connection with the assaults.

    Thousands of paper angels have taken flight above the nave of Ripon Cathedral where they will flutter above worshippers throughout August and September.

    About 10,000 of the origami creations were handmade by more than 100 volunteers during the coronavirus lockdown and feature prayers offered to loved ones and key workers.

    The project has so far raised over £130,000, which will be split between the cathedral and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

    A colourful butterfly rarely seen in South Yorkshire has been spotted in Sheffield.

    Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust say sightings of the purple hairstreak butterfly - which is more generally found in southern England- have been reported across the city and experts believe the species is experiencing a population increase due to the warm spring weather.

    Unlike most butterflies, the Purple Hairstreak does not feed on flowers but gets its nourishment feeding on sticky honeydew on oak tree leaves.

    Ben Keywood from SRWT said: "It's fairly common in the south of England and in Nottinghamshire where it loves the oak trees of Sherwood Forest,.

    "But Sheffield has very few records. This year could be the only opportunity to spot it here and there’s only a two-week window - next year the weather might be different and the population will return to normal.”

    The line-up for Hull's Freedom Festival has been announced, in what will be a online affair because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    Internationally-renowned artists Kaleider, Luke Jerram and Luke Wright will join local talent Downtown Kayoto (pictured above), Emma Fee and Joe Hakim.

    Broadcast in partnership with BBC Radio Humberside, the arts festival would usually attract about 130,000 visitors over five days.

    Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it will now take place virtually between 4 and 6 September, with an app being used to view performances, external.

    The festival celebrates Hull's links with anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce.

    An appeal to find two people who helped a "seriously injured" 84-year-old female pedestrian has been launched by police in West Yorkshire.

    The woman was struck by a silver Volkswagen Golf at Newton Hill roundabout, on Bar Lane in Wakefield, at about 14:45pm on Monday 13 July.

    The injured woman is still in hospital.

    Officers say she was helped by two people who left the scene before speaking to them.

    West Yorkshire Police say: "We'd like to speak to those two people who helped the pedestrian and any other people who may have witnessed the collision."

    The Government has announced more than 50 projects across Yorkshire will share £115m to build homes, infrastructure and create jobs as part of the region's economic recovery from coronavirus.

    The successful projects will receive a portion of the £900 million Getting Building Fund which was announced by the Prime Minister in June.

    Among the projects to benefit are upgrades to cycling infrastructure in East Yorkshire, improvements to Barnsley town centre, the redevelopment of the George Hotel in Huddersfield and improving older terraced homes in the Holbeck area of Leeds.

    Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis, which secured more than £33m, said: "This investment will strengthen our digital infrastructure, improve learning spaces within our schools and colleges, support businesses and create new walking and cycling infrastructure.

    "It will help our effort to make South Yorkshire stronger, greener and fairer as we build back from COVID."

    Leader of Leeds City Council Judith Blake, which was awarded £18m, said: “We are delighted to receive this funding as it will allow us to press ahead with three shovel-ready schemes in Leeds.

    "These are all projects that will help reduce our city’s carbon impact and help the economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic."

    The future of Harrogate's Nightingale Hospital has been cast into more uncertainty after a contract for its use was extended by just two weeks.

    The NHS contract on the 500-bed field hospital based at Harrogate's Convention Centre, which is owned by the council, was due to expire on 31 July.

    The hospital has so far not treated a single coronavirus patient since opening at the peak of the outbreak in April.

    A council spokesman said: "We continue our discussions with colleagues from the NHS about their future plans, and a two week extension has been granted to allow those discussions to continue.

    It comes after Boris Johnson last month announced £3bnto maintain the seven UK Nightingale hospitals until the end of March.

    The council faces a £9m deficit as a result of the pandemic, most of which is lost income from the convention centre.

    The NHS is not paying any rent to the convention centre or the council.

    NHS England has been contacted for a comment.

    Two people have been taken to hospital after a gas explosion at a roadside cafe on the A59 near Skipton.

    Emergency services were called to the incident at a food shack in a lay-by between Bolton Abbey and Skipton at about 06:00.

    The force of the explosion blew the shack's windows out and left scorch marks, a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said.

    The two injured people were taken to hospital for treatment to burns.

    The emergency services have now left the scene and an investigation has begun, according to a fire service spokesperson.
