In a joint statement, council leader Sir Steve Houghton and director of public health in Barnsley Julia Burrows said the number of positive tests was "creeping up" in Wombwell and urged people to "maintain social distancing and follow the rules".

According to the latest figures from Public Health England, the infection rate in Barnsley rose from 14.2 per 100,000 people in the week ending 8 August to 22.3 in the week ending 15 August.

Sir Steve and Ms Burrows said some of the positive cases in Wombwell were the result of people socialising together and urged people to stick to the guidance.

"If we don't maintain social distancing and follow the rules, the situation for Barnsley could get much worse," they said.

"Across the country, we've seen places where shops, pubs and workplaces have been forced to close.

"We need to do everything we can to stop this from happening in Barnsley," the added.

A 12-week consultation is under way on the long-delayed Otley Road cycle route project which was first outlined in 2017 but has hit a series of delays.

Because part of the proposed cycle route will take up footpath verges designated as Stray land, Harrogate Borough Council is required by law to hold a consultation.

It is seeking the views of residents on three other areas of the Stray to be used as part of a land exchange which will legally free-up the verges needed.

These options include land at Wetherby Road (rear of the hospital), St James Drive and Arthurs Avenue.

The council is also seeking views on whether to amend a Stray byelaw that will allow cycling on the route.

Councillor Phil Ireland, the council’s cabinet member for carbon reduction and sustainability, said: "In order for a new, safe, segregated cycleway to be implemented on the verges of Otley Road we need to hear people’s views on the exchange land options and byelaw amendments.

"We believe we have identified three suitable options to offer as exchange land and I’d urge residents to share their views.”

Harrogate Borough Council and North Yorkshire County Council are working together on the project.

  3. South Yorkshire students receive GCSE gradespublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 20 August 2020

Students have been finding out what grades they've been given for their GCSE work - despite not taking exams because of the coronavirus pandemic.

    Imogen

In Sheffield, Meadowhead School student Imogen (pictured) opened her results live on BBC Radio Sheffield.

She said after finding out her exams were cancelled, she was left feeling in the dark about how they would decide her grades.

"I was devastated. We work for five years to do our exams. That's like our entire school life. We were sat in the dark for a few days. Finally, today's the day," she said.

It comes after A-level results were marred by a government U-turn when thousands of students were given lower grades because of results-based on an algorithm.

Imogen added: "I was really worried when they were basing it on the algorithm, because it wasn't based on the teacher's predictions.

"The teachers that know me, know how hard I work and the results from my mock exams, so I was really worried about it. I was really glad when the U-turn happened."

She received a mix of level 9s and 8s - the equivalent of A*s and As.

In Hebden Bridge, The White Lion is up for the Staff Welfare category after paying staff 100% of their wages before the furlough scheme was launched by the government and also checking in on them during the lockdown.

His comments come after exam board Pearson pulled its BTec results on the eve of releasing them.

Pearson apologised and acknowledged the additional uncertainty the decision would cause.

But Phil Sayles, Principal of Selby College, says: "As people progress into 16-18 education, our college and other organisations will take into account the fact the results might be a couple of days late.

"So, I don't think young people should worry this delay is going to stop them getting into colleges like Selby College."

Mr Sayles also told BBC Radio York he believes marks are likely to "stay the same or go up".

He says: "The exam board is adjusting to make sure the same level of fairness which was applied to A-levels and GCSEs is applied to the BTecs."

The victim, a man in his 40s, was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Initial inquiries suggest the man was assaulted by a group of youths who then left the scene, police say.

A cordon remains in place around a "large" area of Whingate Avenue this morning to allow forensic examinations and specialist searches to be carried out, according to the West Yorkshire force.

Det Ch Insp Tony Nicholson said: "We are treating this man’s death as murder and are carrying out extensive inquiries to establish the full circumstances and identify those responsible.

“Our inquiries are at a very early stage and we are very keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the group of youths involved in the area or who has any information that could assist the investigation."

Police will remain at the scene throughout the day, Det Ch Insp Nicholson added.

The four-day horse racing festival, which usually attracts thousands to the city, started earlier today but no spectators will be allowed to attend as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

William Derby, clerk of the course at the Knavesmire, said: "The racecourse contributes £58m a year to the York and Yorkshire economy which has been hit, as well as the hundreds of people who work at the racecourse on a race day and so many hotels and restaurants in the city.

"We won't be able to welcome spectators and that is devastating for race fans, for us as a business and for the city and wider region.

"The sooner we can get spectators back in a safe way with appropriate protocols the better."

  17. Plans to move Parliament to York rejectedpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 19 August 2020

A review of multibillion-pound plans to repair the Palace of Westminster will not consider Boris Johnson's suggestion of moving Parliament to York while the work is carried out, it's been confirmed.

York minster seen from Station Rise

The Prime Minister had asked the body responsible for the project to consider a "possible location outside London" for Parliament to sit while work is carried out to repair the crumbling palace as part of its review of the plans.

But the Restoration and Renewal Sponsor Body and Delivery Authority said it is for MPs and peers to decide where they should sit and it will not form part of the review.

Number 10 sources said Mr Johnson had made his views clear that it was a matter for Parliament to decide, but MPs and peers "should also consider options outside SW1" if they need to leave while the restoration work is carried out.

Ministers are still considering establishing a government hub in York, the plan which had prompted Mr Johnson to suggest the city as a possible temporary venue for Parliament.

The repairs body said Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle and Lord Speaker Lord Fowler told it that "as the location of the Houses is a matter for Parliament, it does not form part of the programme's scope, and consequently would be inappropriate for us to explore further".

Jack Kewley began his challenge at 17:00 yesterday and planned to walk a six-mile route around the city.

He said he was inspired by the Barefoot Soldier, who passed through Ripon earlier this month as he walked the full length of the country for charity.

The father-of-one said he wanted to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation after tackling mental health issues himself last year.

Crossing the finishing line to the song "You'll Never Walk Alone", the 24-year-old was handed a beer by family and friends, before saying: "I'm in pain, but it's done. Smashed it"

He raised more than £1,300 for charity.
