Council 'deeply saddened' after brothers die in seapublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 18 August 2020
Fylde Council said it's "deeply saddened" at the deaths of two teenagers from Dewsbury who died in the sea at the weekend.
Muhammad Azhar Shabbir, 18, and Ali Athar Shabbir, 16, got into difficulties after they were cut off by the tide at St Annes, Lancashire, on Saturday.
Their 15-year-old cousin was with them and managed to swim ashore, but the brothers were found dead on Sunday.
Their family said it was an "extremely difficult time".
The leader of Fylde Council, Councillor Karen Buckley, said it was a "sudden and heartbreaking loss", with the council flying the union flag at half mast outside its offices.
She said: "A lovely day at the seaside in St Annes turned into a terrible tragedy and I cannot imagine the pain [the family] are going through.
"Thank you to the Police, RNLI, Coastguard and National Police Air Service for their painstaking efforts in the search for the two young men.
"We are all deeply saddened for their loss," she added.
