The leader of Fylde Council, Councillor Karen Buckley, said it was a "sudden and heartbreaking loss", with the council flying the union flag at half mast outside its offices.

She said: "A lovely day at the seaside in St Annes turned into a terrible tragedy and I cannot imagine the pain [the family] are going through.

"Thank you to the Police, RNLI, Coastguard and National Police Air Service for their painstaking efforts in the search for the two young men.

All staff at Truth bar, on Westgate, who have been in contact with someone who's tested positive have been advised to self-isolate for 14 days, according to Wakefield Council.

Action has been taken "as quickly as possible" to help limit the spread of the virus and the council is working with Public Health England to manage the outbreak, the council adds.

The bar has been deep-cleaned and remains open with new staff in place, the authority says.

Anna Hartley, Wakefield's director of public health, says: "If anyone is concerned or displaying symptoms - of a high temperature, a new, continuous cough or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste - please self-isolate as soon as possible and get a test.

"Anyone deemed a close contact of one of the positive cases will be contacted via the NHS test and trace programme and advised to self-isolate and get tested," she adds.

Ms Hartley has also urged people to "stay alert and take sensible precautions" as coronavirus lockdown restrictions are eased and more people visit pubs, bars and restaurants.

However, there will be a review on 1 October to assess if there is an ongoing need for the 500-bed field hospital at the town’s convention centre.

Harrogate Borough Council, which owns the venue, has been locked in talks with the NHS for months over how much longer the site will be needed, and it has today announced it will remain open to safeguard against another spike in coronavirus cases this winter.

The temporary hospital has not treated a single coronavirus patient since opening at the peak of the outbreak in April.

It was used for the first time last month when it opened outpatient radiology appointments for non-coronavirus patients.

Centre director Paula Lorimer said: “The convention centre will continue in its role as a Nightingale hospital until 31 March but this will be reviewed on 1 October to assess if there is an ongoing need for the hospital.

“We are very proud to support the NHS and the response to Covid-19 but we continue to lobby government at every level for a post-Nightingale recovery plan for the venue, and the Harrogate district."

  12. Woman stabbed partner after 'decade of domestic abuse'published at 17:19 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

A woman has been jailed for six years for stabbing her partner to death in Hull.

    Sally GodwinImage source, Humberside Police

Sally Godwin, 29, of Dodthorpe, Hull, fatally stabbed Ronald Portz, 30, with a kitchen knife during an argument about drugs in November.

Godwin was jailed at Shefield Crown Court this afternoon having pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Speaking after the sentencing a Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) spokeswoman said the couple both drank and took drugs and would frequently fight and argue while under the influence.

She said the couple had been together since their early teens but "for the past decade or more" Ms Godwin had been suffering domestic abuse at the hands of Mr Portz.

She added that on the night of Mr Portz's death their two children had been at home and had witnessed parts of the incident.

Jade Hakeney from CPS Yorkshire and Humberside said: “This was a tragic incident, which occurred in the wider context of ongoing domestic abuse within the relationship.

“The CPS accepted a plea of guilty to manslaughter rather than murder, on the basis that Sally Godwin experienced a temporary loss of control. The domestic abuse she had suffered was a significant factor in that decision. Although not entirely one way, she had been the victim of abuse and on one occasion was caused serious injury."
