Councillors were told the York Museums Trust, which runs the Castle Museum (pictured), Yorkshire Museum and York Art Gallery, had seen its income collapse due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It was agreed the authority would provide the trust with a letter of guarantee giving it access to up to £1.95m should it need it.

The trust manages the museums for the city council and receives an annual grant of £300,000 a year, with the bulk of its £5.7m yearly income coming from admission charges and other grants.

In the event of the trust being wound-up the council would have to take back control of the museums at an estimated annual cost of £2.5m.

Unlicensed music events and large gatherings breaching coronavirus restrictions over the bank holiday weekend in Leeds will be targeted by new dispersal orders, police say.

Police say they have previously had to intervene at a number of unlicensed music events and other large gatherings in Leeds throughout the lockdown period.

There are concerns similar events are being organised for this weekend, according to the West Yorkshire force.

Alongside existing powers under current Covid-19 legislation, the orders will give officers the ability to ask people to leave a specified area and not to return for 48 hours or face arrest.

The orders also give officers the power to confiscate items being used in an anti-social manner, such as sound systems or other music equipment.

The Leeds-wide orders will cover from today through to Tuesday next week, police add.

Supt Chris Bowen said: "We continue to work with the local authority and public health to encourage people to recognise the risks taking part in such events or gatherings presents.

"We do, however, hope people will recognise the ongoing risks of holding or taking part in such events and do the right thing in everyone’s best interests."

The depot, in Bramley, is being deep-cleaned and further contact tracing is being carried out after "a number" of workers tested positive for Covid-19, according to a joint statement issued by Leeds City Council, Public Health England and Greggs.

The race meeting, which starts on 9 September, is the biggest event in the racecourse calendar at Doncaster, dating back to 1776.

The plan is for 3,600 fans on the first day, rising to 6,200 on the final three days.

Normally, up to 30,000 people would be able to attend the event.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, many professional sports have taken place behind closed doors with no fans being allowed to watch in venues.

But now smaller attendances have been approved at some events, with spectators being asked to ensure social distancing is maintained.
