Electric scooters and bikes could soon be available to rent in York as part of a year-long trial, it's been revealed.
City of York Council has unveiled plans for the scooters and bikes to be available at the hospital and University of York as part of a bid to increase "green" options for travelling around the city.
However, under Department for Transport guidelines, customers will need at least a provisional driving licence, insurance and a smartphone to take part in the scheme - and electric scooters can be used on roads and cycleways, but not pavements.
Councillor Andy D'Agorne said: "This could provide a really good opportunity to explore how e-scooters might add to the mix of sustainable transport options, while helping to improve air quality and expand our electrical vehicle charging offer.
"The trial could also form part of the city’s Covid-19 response in terms of, for example, providing sustainable alternatives to support capacity on public transport for key workers at the hospital."
The cost is likely to be about £1 to unlock the bike or scooter and 20p per minute to ride – similar to prices in other cities rolling out trials such as Cambridge and Milton Keynes (pictured).

Staff at a Sheffield bakery say they've been abused by people refusing to wear face coverings which are currently mandatory in retail premises due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Forge Bakehouse took to Facebook saying staff ask customers "all day" to wear masks to then be met with verbal abuse.
It said: "Whatever your view on masks, we don't really care. Follow the rules or please do not come."
Speaking to the BBC, Forge Bakehouse owner Martha Brown said people who are exempt from wearing masks are still welcomed, but people who just forget to bring masks are the problem.
She said: "We have to now refuse to serve a lot of people. Initially we were giving out disposable masks, but obviously that's a cost to us for people's mistakes.
"We're understanding that sometimes it's a genuine mistake, someone's just forgotten. So we were giving out masks then we stopped doing that.
"We're happy to save bread and pastries and put them aside so customers can come back later with a mask. We feel like we're being reasonable, but there kind of needs to be a line drawn where we stop and refuse to serve people."
Authorities in Corfu investigating the death of a British woman who was hit by a speedboat are focusing on two suspect boats.
Claire Glatman, 60, who lived near Bedale, North Yorkshire, was injured at Avlaki Beach, on the north-east of the Greek island on Monday.
A post-mortem examination showed she died from multiple injuries probably caused by a boat propeller.
One of the two suspect boats belongs to a Briton, the other to a Greek citizen.
The island's coroner Ioannis Aivatidis examined the boats on Wednesday and said he found elements that could be used for a DNA test, but he confirmed no tissue was found on the two boats' propellers.
As more than 48 hours have passed since Mrs Glatman's death, according to the Greek legal system there cannot be any arrest without an arrest warrant and no fast-track trial can be held.
Sources in the local judiciary and the investigation have told the BBC they are treating the incident as an accident, which would mean the most likely charge would be manslaughter by negligence, which is classed as a misdemeanour under Greek law.
