Dr Lincoln Sargeant, the county’s director of public health, said the risk of pupils getting seriously ill from Covid-19 is dwarfed by what he described as the “certainty of long-term harm” if they do not attend classes.

Dr Sargeant said: "Very few, if any, children or teenagers will come to long-term harm from Covid-19 due solely to attending school.

“There is an overwhelming need for children and young people to return to school now, not just so they can catch up with missed studies, but also for their mental health and their wider development," he added.

Thousands of pupils have begun returning from today after North Yorkshire County Council said all students in all year groups are expected back behind their desks.

Teachers have more than three months of schooling to catch up on, and classrooms will look different with one-way systems, screens keeping students apart and staggered start times.

Work throughout August in Burngreave to disrupt crime saw a number of people arrested for suspected offences including assault, possession with intent to supply and wounding, according to the South Yorkshire force.

Four people were also arrested on recall to prison, police say.

Following a stabbing in August, three men were arrested and banned from the area.

Meanwhile, a car was stopped and found to contain about £50,000 worth of suspected Class A and Class B drugs, resulting in the driver being charged.

And three drug warrants in the area led to £200,000 worth of Class B drugs being seized.

Sgt Ben Hall, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "Local knowledge is vital to successful proactive policing. We have great links with local organisations and community groups and this means we know exactly where we should be targeting our resources.

“For example, we’ve had a number of positive stop-searches because of community intelligence and we’ve also made several vehicle seizures."
