Greg Fell, director of public health in Sheffield, says the council, both universities and the students’ unions were all clear that freshers week – which normally sees big parties every night and events throughout the daytime – will not go ahead as usual due to Covid-19.

In a full council meeting, Mr Fell said: “The freshers weeks have been extensively considered by both universities and the students’ unions.

"All parties are very clear freshers week will look very, very, very different this year. There won’t be students’ union organised mega parties with millions of people all in the students union bar,. It’s just not going to happen.

“What is concerning is I know there are advertised mega raves. Our licensing team have been all over it and have done some extensive investigations, so I don’t think that’s actually happening...It is a concern, no doubt about that."

Both universities’ campuses are as Covid-safe as possible, Mr Fell also said during the meeting.

The event was due to be held between 7 November and 19 December in Millennium Square.

The "difficult" decision has been taken by organisers Frankfurt City Council, according to event partners Leeds City Council.

Kurt Stroscher, Frankfurt City Council's director of festivals and events, says: "The arguments as to whether the Christmas Market should go ahead were considered very carefully. However, the health and safety of visitors have to be the top priority.

"Christmas markets are very much a place for socialising in a warm and cosy atmosphere, with Millennium Square the perfect setting for this. This fundamental part of the Leeds Christmas Market’s identity cannot be achieved in a global pandemic," he adds.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, added: “We’re obviously extremely disappointed the German Market won’t be taking place this year and we know it’s been an incredibly difficult decision for our long-time friends in Frankfurt to have to make.

“While we know people will be similarly disappointed, we fully understand the safety of the public, traders and the city as a whole has to come first while we are still fighting this pandemic."

Leeds City Council says it will now look at "alternative ways to celebrate the festive season safely" in line with social distancing and the latest government guidance.

It means the money, which is seized by police in South Yorkshire from criminals and organised crime groups, will be put into projects that keep people safe.

South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings said last year that groups could bid for money up to £5,000.

This year, that's been doubled, topped up with money from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).

Dr Billings said: “The POCA funds are particularly welcomed because it means we are taking money out of the hands of drug dealers, organised criminals and those who terrorise communities, and putting it instead into the hands of those who do run good and worthwhile projects and activities.

“We have given funds in the past to organisations that provide support for victims of domestic violence, and regularly award funding to community groups for young people – these include boxing gyms, sporting activities and arts projects for disadvantaged young people."

  18. Sheffield reconsiders proposed clean air zonepublished at 09:59 British Summer Time 11 September 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Proposals to charge polluting vehicles for entering Sheffield city centre are to be reconsidered due to the impact of coronavirus.

The city council said the pandemic had meant a drop in air pollution of up to 33% compared with 2019.

The zone would have seen a daily charge of £50 for buses and £10 for taxis, lorries and vans introduced in 2021.

Bob Johnson, cabinet member for transport, said: "The current situation is dramatically different to the one in which our proposals were originally developed."

He said the authority would review the proposals to include the impact of Covid-19 on travel patterns.

Mr Johnson said: "This will help us decide if the same action is needed, or if changes can be made to be successful in reducing air pollution for the long term."

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce welcomed the review.
