Yesterday, over 2,500 spectators at Doncaster watched horse racing for the first time in Britain since the outbreak of the pandemic as a government-endorsed pilot event.

However, during the day the council told race organisers not to allow fans in for the remainder of the St Leger over fears of a spike in the number of virus infections.

Arena Racing Company, which runs Doncaster Racecourse, confirmed the remainder of the four-day meeting will be held without spectators.

The decision will cost the company about £250,000, the firm says.

Mark Spincer, the managing director of Arena's racing division, says: "It's cost a lot trying to get this right. The team has done an amazing job and I feel so sorry for them - some have only been back off furlough for two week.

"This isn't just a blow for racing, it's sport. It's going to make it slower and harder for everyone to get back, but we have to follow the advice," he adds.

Morrisons said like-for-like sales, excluding fuel, rose by 8.7% in the six months to the beginning of August.

However, pre-tax profit fell by a quarter after its costs rose by £155m to deal with the pandemic, including temporary workers and staff bonuses.

It also said poor fuel sales hit income as more people worked from home.

However, Morrisons said the extra costs had been partly offset by four months of business rates relief of £93m,

Morrisons is one of the UK's oldest retailers. It opened its first town-centre shop in 1958 and first supermarket in 1961, both in Bradford.

Under potential new rules, owners who don’t pick up their dog’s waste could face a fine of up to £1,000 – 20 times the existing £50 fine.

According to a report approved by Barnsley Council's cabinet on Wednesday, a number of regulations could be put in place such as the requirement to keep dogs on leads in specified areas and the requirement for owners to pick up dog mess and carry “suitable means” to do so.

There could also be a limit on the number of dogs to be walked by a single owner at any one time.

Failure to comply with the regulations would result in a £100 on-the-spot fine, and non-payment could land the owner with a £1,000 court fine.

The Public Service Protection Order would be implemented across the borough, and a third party may be brought in to enforce the rules on the council’s behalf.

Attacks have increased by almost 60% since late March, according to the latest figures, with officers reporting a trend of biting and spitting among offenders.

In the Harrogate district, incidents include officers being bitten, grabbed by the throat and kicked in the head and chest.

One officer was also bitten and spat at while another had to be treated in hospital after being kicked in the face.

North Yorkshire Police's Chief Constable Lisa Winward described the attacks as “sickening and wrong”.

Her calls for officers to be treated with more respect have been echoed by commissioner Julia Mulligan.

Ms Mulligan said: “We should all be disgusted by this increase in assaults. Police officers and staff put themselves on the front line, run towards danger and keep us safe.”

Since late March, 87 assaults against North Yorkshire Police officers and staff have been reported. During the same period in 2019, the number was 55 – that's a rise of 58%.

It sold at auction on Tuesday for £50,000.

Auctioneer Paul Fairweather, from Omega Auctions, said: "An incredible price! We expected it to sell well but that certainly exceeded our expectations."

The star, who now has an estimated fortune of more than £200m, said he wrote the songs after his first love left him heartbroken.
