  4. Leeds at coronavirus 'tipping point' says health chiefpublished at 08:01 British Summer Time 9 September 2020

Leeds is at a "tipping point" in its response to coronavirus, according to a health chief in the city.

    People in masks

Victoria Eaton, the director of public health, also said if things didn't improve restrictions could be placed on the city "as early as next week".

The city's latest seven-day infection rate was 56.1 cases per 100,000 people.

When it was added to Public Health England's list on Friday as an "area of concern" the rate was 32.5 per 100,000.

Ms Eaton said that local restrictions were "not inevitable" if the measures being put in place took effect.

She said there were issues with "house parties and socialising when social distancing breaks down".

Ms Eaton added: "In Leeds, and as a country, we are at a tipping point and we really need to step up the responses to this virus.

"It feels like a level of complacency has kicked in and we need to address that pretty quickly."

The supermarket is expected to announce the move later this week.

Rivals such as Tesco are hiring more staff to support internet shopping after the lockdown accelerated the shift from visiting stores to online.

The UK's fourth-biggest supermarket had about 97,000 workers before the pandemic and took on 45,000 extra temporary staff during the coronavirus crisis.

About 25,000 of those staff are still working for the supermarket, and more than 6,000 have already been given permanent jobs.

Morrisons is expected to announce on Thursday - when it publishes its interim results - that it plans to make thousands more temporary positions permanent in the coming weeks.

A spokesperson said: "Morrisons has been playing its full part in feeding the nation and that has required the largest recruitment drive our company has ever seen."

This morning BBC Radio 5 Live’s Your Call programme heard from parents whose children were missing school while they waited for coronavirus tests.

Chris in Selby was worried she was keeping her eight-year-old son off school unnecessarily.

“Two days ago, he woke up with a streaming cold," she said, "no temperature, no other symptoms. He coughed once every hour."

She rang 111, who advised her to get him tested, however when she tried to book a test, the nearest centre was 45 miles away and there were no tests available.

“I’ve now got a child at home who I really don’t think has coronavirus who is obviously now kept off school for another week after being off for six months... There will be children all over the country off school with a mild cough,” she said.

Meanwhile Anna in Banbury kept her two children off school on Monday as her husband had a cough and a temperature over the weekend.

The nearest available test was a five-hour round trip away in Wales.

“Luckily, we’ve got a car, and we can travel,” she said, "I’m almost tempted to order home tests so we’ve got them to hand so if it happens again, we can take a test quickly and send it off straightaway.”

Katherine in Liverpool has two children in a primary school which has been partially closed due to coronavirus.

“My children are in Year 4 and Year 6 so luckily they’re still in,” she said.

“Half the school was sent home just after lunch yesterday which was a bit of a shock for a lot of parents... we’re thinking it’s going to be us soon.

“I know that they’re trying to do their best but all the kids were so happy to be back in... I did say to my children: ‘Enjoy today, do as much as you can.’”

  17. York e-scooter trial scheme gets go-aheadpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 8 September 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Electric scooters and bikes will be made available for rent at hubs in York after council transport bosses approved a one-year trial.

    E-scooterImage source, Jeff Spicer/PA Wire

As electric scooters are currently illegal to ride in the UK on roads, cycle lanes or pavements, the plans needed council support and the rental scheme will be the only way to legally ride an e-scooter around the city.

Speeds will be limited by "geo-fencing" technology – which pinpoints the location of each scooter – and it will be used to stop them from working on pedestrianised streets, councillors have been told.

Scooters will also need to be left in parking bays, to be installed across the city, when customers have finished their journey.

If they are not left in a correct location, users will continue to be charged per minute in a bid to stop scooters cluttering up streets.

The scheme will be provided by a private company rather than the council and is part of Department for Transport green travel plans.

York Hospital and the University of York have supported the plans.

Dan Braidley, transport coordinator at York Hospital, said: "This is an opportunity for York to be innovative and do something. I think we are missing a trick if we don’t try it."

Councillor Andy D’Agorne, executive member for transport, said: "Hopefully we will take the opportunity to learn from the experience and develop something that’s really appropriate for the city of York."
