A meeting of councillors and council officers heard how, while clusters of infections in Kirkstall and Harehills were now under control, there was still a problem of younger people mixing together and spreading the virus.

Mariana Pexton, the council’s chief corporate support officer, claimed measures might have to be introduced to restrict individuals’ movements if infection rates continued to worsen.

But she added such measures might have to be different to those from recent local lockdowns in areas such as Bradford and Kirklees.

Ms Pexton told Leeds City Council’s strategy and resources scrutiny board: "We have two very different patterns emerging – one is community clusters which we are working on and are turning around.

“But we have this more dynamic pattern now of young people, across the city. It is more to do with social gatherings, coming back from holiday and exam celebrations. The solution to that is potentially different in terms of movement restrictions.

“We are ramping communications up to tackle that and stem that flow of the increase. If we need to, we will need to consider movement restrictions."

Last Friday, Leeds was added as an “area of concern” on the government’s coronavirus "watch list".

  10. London-bound train service reinstated for Sheffieldpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

A full train service from Sheffield to London has been reinstated for the first time since the start of the coronavirus lockdown.

    EMR Intercity train

In March, East Midlands Railway was forced to start running a reduced timetable as commuters were asked to stay home because of the pandemic.

Trains were still running to help key workers travel across the country, but from today the full Sheffield to London timetable is being brought back as more people use public transport.

More services are also being introduced to help travellers stay socially-distanced while on board trains.

Face coverings should be worn by anybody who isn't exempt, the train operating company said, with hand-washing facilities also on board services.

Chris Wright, from East Midlands Railway, said: “As schools and businesses reopen across the country, we are doing everything we can to provide as much capacity as possible.

“The reintroduction of our full timetable to and from London St Pancras International, includes an additional 33 trains per day."

  12. 'Forgotten' castle is key medieval site - archaeologistspublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

Sheffield's "forgotten" medieval castle was one of the most important strongholds in England, according to archaeologists who have recently investigated the site where it once stood.

The castle was demolished in the 17th Century and its remains were buried beneath the Castle Market in the 1960s.

The redevelopment of the area and the demolition of buildings enabled archaeologists to carry out a new dig at the site in 2018 and their findings will be published at the end of this month.

Professor John Moreland, from the University of Sheffield's department of archaeology, says: "Sheffield is seen by most people as the Steel City, but what our research makes clear is that the city has a deep history that dates right back to the Middle Ages.

"Unfortunately, since the castle was largely destroyed following the English Civil War and multiple developments have been built on its site ever since, this rich medieval history of the city has largely been forgotten or ignored."

The medieval castle was begun in 1270 and its gatehouse, which was excavated in the 20th Century, was similar in style to Rhuddlan Castle in north Wales.

The castle's curtain wall survives close to the gatehouse, with a further small section to the west and archaeologists think large stretches of it may survive on the northern edge of the site, overlooking the River Don.

A spokesman for the university said an assessment of all the excavations shows the castle was "among the most important political and cultural centres in medieval England".

The university team has pulled together unpublished archaeological work and the results of the 2018 dig and their conclusions will be launched on 26 September at the university's Festival Of The Mind event.

Fay Turner, from Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Donating organs saves lives. Talk to your family and friends about your wishes. Make sure they know what you want to do in the event of your death.

“By donating your organs, you can save a mother, father, son or daughter being taken away from their loved ones too soon.

“This year in particular, when so many families have lost someone dear to them because of Covid-19, that message has never been more crucial.”

The trust said last year 42 people received a life-saving or life-changing transplant after Hull families consented to organ donation.

"The expectations of passengers have rightfully changed exponentially in this time and it is only right we move to meet them."

A final decision on the plans is expected to be made later this year.
