About 11,000 repair jobs in the city which were put on hold during the Covid-19-lockdown are now being worked through and are due to be completed by the end of November.

But the repair service expects to see around 28,000 more jobs logged on top of the normal rate from all the non-emergency jobs which were not reported during the height of the lockdown.

These figures were revealed when councillor Penny Baker asked councillor Paul Wood, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, a question during full council members’ questions.

She asked: “Repairs to council houses have been delayed by up to six months now, how long is the council housing repairs team going to take to get up to speed?”

Councillor Wood replied: “It is expected this will take up to March 2021 to resume normal service delivery times and be on top of this.

"However it is very unpredictable to forecast the run rate of these coming in and where the service will get spikes in repairs being logged.”

  17. Scarborough funfair cancelled over coronavirus concernspublished at 08:51 British Summer Time 16 September 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A funfair planned to take place later this month in Scarborough has been scrapped over fears about the possible spread of Covid-19.

    Scarborough

Shaw’s and International Funfairs, the organisers of Scarborough’s annual William Street Fair, and Scarborough Borough Council say they have jointly decided to cancel this year’s event, which was due to take place between 30 September and 3 October.

Since last week, a number of concerns had been raised online by members of the public over how social distancing would be maintained at a time when the number of coronavirus cases in the borough is spiking.

Over the weekend, borough councillor Bill Chatt also raised his fears with the authority, which owns the car park where the fair would have been held, saying it was “strange” it was being allowed to continue.

In a joint statement, the organisers and the council have now confirmed it won't be going ahead.

They say: “The fair has a good reputation with local residents and those that come back to enjoy it year after year for being safe and well-managed.

"Therefore, in light of the ever-changing situation with the Covid-19 pandemic, in particular the implications of the new ‘rule of six’ and the rising infection rate among young people, for whom the fair is a popular evening out, the event will not take place this year.

"We know loyal fans of the fair will be disappointed, but we have to put their safety and that of the local community and fairground staff first."

  19. Aleksander Pawlak: Five accused of attack on victimpublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 16 September 2020

A man suffered fatal injuries in "a sustained violent assault" by a gang armed with table and chair legs, a court has heard.

Aleksander PawlakImage source, West Yorkshire Police

Aleksander Pawlak, 30, was pronounced dead in Pinderfields Road, Wakefield, shortly on 9 September 2019.

He had suffered facial fractures and other injuries in the late-night attack at his basement flat.

Prosecutor Peter Moulson QC told jurors that all five defendants had travelled in a Volkswagen Passat from Southampton to Wakefield.

He told the jury that a dispute over a debt, possibly drugs related, between Adam Litwinowicz, 24, and Mr Pawlak had led to the killing.

The court heard that some of the group had brought table or chair legs with them and some also had gloves.

Mr Moulson told the jury that the nature and distribution of the injuries strongly suggested that he had been subjected to "a sustained, violent assault" close to the time of his death.

Bradford Crown Court heard four men and a woman deny murder and conspiracy to commit robbery.

    The case continues.
