  5. 'Stupid' lockdown drivers caught at almost twice limitpublished at 09:25 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2020

Speeding motorists in North Yorkshire have been travelling at almost double the limit during the current lockdown, police have revealed.

One driver was recorded at 56mph in a 30mph limit in Helmsley, while another was clocked at 111mph on the A64 near Malton, according to North Yorkshire Police.

Officers have criticised the “stupidity” of drivers who have reached almost 60mph in 30mph limits in areas including Selby, Harrogate, Hambleton and Ryedale and say they are taking “robust” action.

Criminal justice manager Andy Tooke said: “Since lockdown two began, we’ve seen a marked increase in the number of motoring offences we’ve captured.

"These are places where children are going to school, and residents are going on walks – yet some motorists are barreling through these towns and villages at lethal speeds.

“At a time when communities are doing everything they can to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed, driving through 30mph areas at twice the speed limit is sheer stupidity," he added.

  7. Bridlington School ex-head 'destroyed teacher sex note'published at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2020

Headlands School in Bridlington previously had a "culture" of inappropriate behaviour and attitudes by staff, the inquiry was told.

Five staff members were convicted of sexual offences against children between 2006 and 2010.

During the hearing, Anthony Halford apologised to anyone who was "harmed".

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) heard the anonymous note was sent to him in 2000 about teacher Ian Blott having sex with a pupil in a cupboard.

Blott was jailed in 2006 after admitting four charges of sexual activity with a child under 18.

"I take responsibility for it. We destroyed it because it was monstrous really," said Mr Halford, who was head between 1991 and 2004.

He said he did not consider the letter as a child protection issue because he "thought it was a libellous note", adding: "I thought it was just lies."

The hearing is part of an investigation into incidents of sexual abuse at schools which will also include Clifton College in Bristol and Hillside First School in Somerset.

  9. Face-to-face GP appointments for Harrogate Covid patientspublished at 08:04 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2020

Until now, patients with Covid-19 in the Harrogate district who urgently needed an in-person appointment with a doctor have been seen at their own surgery.

But doctors say it’s more practical if Covid-positive patients, or those displaying symptoms, can be seen at a dedicated site elsewhere.

Now, NHS North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group (NYCCG) says it's secured the use of the Jennyfield Styan Community Centre in Grantley Drive from the council until January.

The centre is usually home to support groups and youth clubs, but they've been temporarily stopped due to Covid-19 restrictions and the current national lockdown.

Doctors are due to begin seeing patients there next week after they've been referred by their own GP practice and where a face-to-face appointment is deemed essential.

Dr Charles Parker, from NYCCG, said: "This additional capacity will be of enormous benefit to practices throughout the Harrogate district and will help ensure doctors’ surgeries can continue to meet the demands of a busy winter period."
