The research says developing technologies to decarbonise industries in the area could lead to the creation of almost 50,000 jobs by 2027 and help the region recover from economic damage caused by the Covid pandemic.

The report found that deploying carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen technologies in the Humber region would create up to 25,200 jobs in construction and a further 24,500 across the supply chain and wider economy.

Drax is looking to convert its four existing biomass operations at its power station near Selby, to CCS in order to achieve its ambition to become the world's first carbon negative energy company by 2030.

Will Gardiner, Drax Group CEO, said: "The technologies are ready to go, so tens of thousands of jobs could be created as early as 2024.

"This would deliver a real shot in the arm to communities struggling as a result of the Covid crisis," he added.

Hull's director of public health, Julia Weldon, says 57 of the city's 97 schools have seen closures in some year groups, but only one primary school has been completely closed to all children "for a very short period of time".

However, Ms Weldon told BBC Breakfast that Hull City Council was not asking the government for the power to close more schools.

She said: "It's really difficult when you've got such widespread infection but we will maintain schools.

"What we want is the ability, perhaps in the next phase of this pandemic response, for local schools who know their children and know their families to make those local decisions so they can maintain the best offer they possibly can."

On Monday, Hull topped the government table of infection rates in English local authorities with 2,017 new cases recorded in the seven days to 12 November - the equivalent of 776.4 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of six fixed penalty notices have been issued "as a last resort" after the firms failed to adhere to the rules despite being given "support and guidance", Wakefield Council says.

The authority says it has received 264 calls from members of the public since 1 October complaining about a business not following coronavirus protocols.

Non-essential stores have been forced to close since 5 November, when England was put under lockdown for a second time.

The council says it's unable to name the businesses it has fined, because all six notices could still be challenged and appealed against through the courts.

Councillor Maureen Cummings, portfolio holder for communities, says she understands it's "an extremely difficult time for local businesses".

"However, there are some businesses who are still not abiding by the rules and are quite simply risking people’s lives.

"The national restrictions are not easy, but are absolutely crucial if we are to control the spread of the virus and ultimately save lives," she adds.

He said: "I couldn't believe what I saw. I thought, 'Surely I've not taken these'. But I had."

Photos showing the Park Hill housing estate, the so-called Hole in the Road - a landmark roundabout and subway - and other Sheffield city centre scenes were all developed and compiled by Mr Jones, who also shared some online.

"Everybody said, 'These are amazing, you should write a book'," Mr Jones added.

A photo showing a mother on a bus holding her child is particularly special for Mick, after the woman's daughter came forward when she'd seen the candid photo.

Mr Jones added: "Altogether, I've got about 300 photos in my negative folder, quite a few are rubbish and some have deteriorated with age.

"There are about 150 of them that are top notch. I considered myself a gifted amateur at best. I'm not a professional photographer or anything like that."

The Novavax trials are taking place in Leeds and Bradford, with hundreds more volunteers being recruited.

They'll be testing a two-dose vaccine developed in the US, with 10,000 people across the country helping to trial it.

It follows two months of successful trials carried out by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

Professor Dinesh Saralaya, from NIHR, said: "The trial we are conducting, this candidate will be probably rolled out to the general public because of the ease of which it can be administered and the ease of storage, and the efficiency that it produces an immune response."

The inspiration for it came from the school being located a very short distance away from the coast.

  17. Watch: Wakefield medics 'can't see end' to Covid patientspublished at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2020

Staff at a West Yorkshire hospital say they "can't see an end" to the cycle of people being admitted with coronavirus.

Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield is currently treating over 300 Covid-19 patients - twice as many as it saw during the peak of the first wave in April.

The NHS hospital expects to see a "dramatic increase" in intensive care patients in the next fortnight.

Neil Allan, clinical lead at the hospital's intensive care unit, says: "We're all struggling a little bit, we're working a lot longer hours, working a lot of night shifts just to try to cover the service.

"There's an ever-increasing number of patients coming through the hospital and within two weeks or so they end up filtering through to intensive care. At the moment we can't really see an end to what's happening."

The number of high-dependency beds at the hospital has been doubled to treat people with breathing difficulties, with doctors aiming to keep as many people on non-invasive ventilation as possible.

Tracey Spacey, a critical care nurse, said: "I have every confidence the patients get the care they require. What I'm slightly less confident about is the resilience of the staff to get through this second wave and further on."

  18. 'National support' needed for Covid-hit Hull - Health bosspublished at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2020

People and businesses in Hull need to know what restrictions they'll face when the current coronavirus lockdown ends on 2 December, the city's health boss says.

A Covid signImage source, PA Media

Hull remains the part of the country with the highest infection rate, with 776 cases per 100,000 people in the week to 12 November.

The council leader has described the situation as a "health emergency", external.

The government says it's too early to say what form the restrictions will take after the official end of the current lockdown, but hopes to bring back the regional tiers.

Julia Weldon, Hull's director of public health, says national support is needed to help the city recover.

She says: "Hull is the fourth most deprived city in the country. We've done well in terms of our economic upturn recently and increasing jobs.

"We are really concerned the pandemic will turn the curve backwards for us. We need that support nationally for cities like ours to help us in the next phase and to recover from this."

Doctors are warning they may have to stop routine operations at Scarborough Hospital in the next few days because nearly a third of beds are now taken up by patients with coronavirus.

Figures released yesterday put the district among the top five areas of England for new coronavirus infections.

Scarborough Hospital is now treating about 60 patients with Covid-19, health bosses say.

Dr Ed Smith, the hospital's emergency medicine consultant, says: "We're very pressured within the hospital and don't have a lot of space, so we are struggling to accommodate all the patients we have.

"But we have a well-rehearsed and well-developed plan for managing the surgeries and activities. Within that we may have to consider postponing routine care and operations, very, very soon."
