A yellow warning is the least severe warning issued by the Met office and it means the weather is likely to have "some impact", for example travel disruption.

The Met Office says: "Icy patches are likely to develop on untreated surfaces as skies clear overnight and into Christmas Day, especially where showers fall during the evening or surfaces remain wet following recent rainfall."

A total of 10 whales, believed to be juvenile sperm whales, was discovered at about 08:30 this morning on a beach between Tunstall and Withernsea.

Only four of the whales are still alive, it's been confirmed.

Members of the coastguard and British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) are at the scene, though no rescue is under way due to the sea conditions and the rising tide.

Humberside Police has issued a warning following concerns over the safety of the gathered crowd and the safety of those trying to rescue the whales.

Ch Supt Darren Downs said: "I understand the public interest in the incident, but I would urge people to stay away from the area to allow the teams from HM Coastguard to manage what is an extremely distressing scene.

"I would also remind people that there is a risk to themselves and others as crowds gather to witness the scene.

"The Covid-19 pandemic remains a high risk to public health people should not gather in groups as there is a danger of transmission amongst the crowds," he added.

Emma Regan, who volunteers at Halifax Homeless Shelter, had the idea after seeing a similar scheme in Dublin.

Many coats have now been donated to hang up on the West Yorkshire town's North Bridge and she said it was "good to know the world isn't all bad".

She added: "It's in my nature to help out. Obviously with all these lockdowns I have some spare time, so I thought I'd try and give back, alongside my mum.

"I thought it'd help the homeless, and anyone else, with it being so cold at the moment."

Jenny Lynn, a Calderdale councillor, said: "Calderdale is known for its kindness and as usual the response from our communities to help others has been overwhelming.

"We've contacted the organiser and the coats that have been left already will be donated to the existing clothes bank at the St Augustine's Centre charity in Halifax."

The pod of whales, believed to be juvenile sperm whales, was discovered at about 08:30 this morning on a beach between Tunstall and Withernsea.

Members of the coastguard and British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) are at the scene, though no rescue is under way due to the sea conditions and the rising tide.

The whales are all "in very poor nutritional condition" and due to their size they rarely survive long once on land, the BDMLR said.

Members of the public are being asked by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to stay away from the scene to allow the authorities to work safely.

The coastguard and the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) are on the beach, between Tunstall and Withernsea, near Hull.

No rescue is under way due to the sea state and the rising tide, a BDMLR spokesperson said.

The pod most likely consists of young whales who have suffered a "navigation error", the spokesperson added.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "Just before 08:00 HM Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public with a report of seeing a number of whales on the shoreline at Withernsea beach.

"Coastguard rescue teams from Withernsea, Hornsea and Easington have been sent.

  10. Food bank's stockpile plan for Brexit and end of furloughpublished at 11:40 Greenwich Mean Time 24 December 2020

A South Yorkshire food bank has been stockpiling in anticipation of a surge in demand caused by the prospect of the coronavirus furlough scheme ending and a possible no-deal Brexit.

    Spires FoodbankImage source, Spires Foodbank

Before the first national lockdown in March, Spires Foodbank in Sheffield served about 30 people a week.

Now, staff say it has 250 weekly users, with manager Andru Keel saying they are "bringing in more storage units" to cope with demand for tinned and dried goods.

Mr Keel said the charity, based in the Arbourthorne area, had struggled at the height of the pandemic "when the numbers went through the roof".

He added: "Despite seeing a reduction in people needing the food bank since the first lockdown, we are still 700% busier than before Covid hit."

Natalie Taylor-Robinson, of the East Riding Food Poverty Alliance, said the nine food banks it represents were "panicking" about the threat of a no-deal Brexit and the end of furlough in April.

She said there had been "a dramatic increase in demand", with three food banks being set up in the East Riding "specifically due to Covid".

The Department for Work and Pensions said it had provided a £400m package of "support for this winter and beyond, including £170m to help families stay warm and well-fed" and money to support food aid charities.

Insp Graham Dyson said: “This year has been really difficult for all and it was fantastic to see all our colleagues wanting to do something for those needed that little extra support.

"We understand how hard it can be for some, especially this year and at this time of year, and we wanted to show our support for all those voluntary groups who give so much at all times to help others.”

BAE Systems says it's the end of an era as its plant in Brough finishes production of Hawk jets, with only one final delivery to Qatar.

In October 2017, BAE announced almost 400 job losses at the site.

More than 200 staff have since taken voluntary redundancy, and more than 100 are moving to other BAE sites.

Dave Corfield, site manager for BAE Systems at Brough says: "It's an emotional day and a sad day as well.

"I've been at the plant now for 42 years, so it's sad to see it go, but we will reach that end point with real pride."

From January, there will be about 650 people employed at the site with the focus on engineering, rather than manufacturing.

The Prime Minister and his fiancee Carrie Symonds will be among those taking part, after they phoned organiser Mary Beggs-Reid, from Harrogate, about the campaign earlier this week.

Mrs Beggs-Reid said her event is "more needed now than ever" after strict measures have been put in place across the UK to help combat the spread of coronavirus.

With the event taking place today, over 477,000 people have now joined Mrs Beggs-Reid's Facebook group Worldwide Christmas Eve Jingle.

Thousands of people across the UK have been asked to ring bells for two minutes at 18:00 as part of the campaign, which started on 19 October.

The campaign has been backed by celebrities including Michael Sheen and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, members of the Royal Family and politicians of all parties.

Mrs Beggs-Reid said: "It was just a simple bell-ring to start with, but it's evolved into so much more, so that for two minutes on Christmas Eve nobody feels alone."

The 41-year-old was contacted by No 10 after Mr Johnson expressed an interest in ringing bells on Christmas Eve.

Mrs Beggs-Reid said: "I think it's fantastic the Prime Minister is getting behind an everyday mum like me and trying to help communities as much as we can."

  20. City MPs warn of 'worrying rise' in phone mast attackspublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2020

Bradford's MPs have condemned a "worrying rise" in attacks on mobile phone masts and telecoms engineers in the city.

    5G phone mast

The cross-party group said it was "extremely important" no more masts were vandalised to allow people to stay connected this Christmas.

Attacks on 5G masts in the UK have been fuelled by conspiracy theories wrongly linking 5G and coronavirus.

In a joint statement, the politicians said: "There's been a worrying rise in attacks on mobile phone masts, and even on telecoms engineers, in the Bradford area in recent months.

"At a time when there is more need than ever for people to stay connected to their loved ones over the festive period, it's important no more masts are vandalised."

Robbie Moore, Conservative MP for Keighley, said: "These attacks have got to stop, they create network outages leaving thousands of people unable to access critical 3G and 4G services."
