1. Stolen East Yorkshire spaniel found 250 miles awaypublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 21 May 2021

The third of three spaniels stolen from East Yorkshire in February has been found more than 250 miles away in Kent.

    Keedy, Cocker Spaniel

Two of the dogs stolen from a farm at Thornholme, near Burton Agnes, were found shortly afterwards in Lancashire and reunited with their owners.

The third - named Keedy - was handed into a vet in Canterbury following a new appeal by Humberside Police earlier this week. Owner Keith Fetches said: "It's brilliant to have him back."

Keedy, who was missing for over three months, has now been reunited with the other two dogs, Jazz, nine, and Robbie, 14.

Some have claimed the demand for dogs during lockdown has led to a significant increase in pets being stolen.

One charity, DogLost, saw reported thefts rise from 172 dogs in 2019 to 465 in 2020, as demand pushed up prices.

Humberside Police said the number of dog thefts reported in the region remained low, but urged owners to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

The force also thanked "everyone who shared our appeals" which helped reunite the dogs with the family.

The variant, VUI-21MAY-01, is currently being investigated by the government health body.

In a statement, external PHE said: "There have been 49 cases of VUI-21MAY-01 across the country to date, mainly concentrated in Yorkshire and the Humber.

"Four more cases of the Variant of Concern VOC-202101/02, also known as P.1, have been identified in England – 3 in South Gloucestershire and one in Bradford, West Yorkshire."

There's currently no evidence the variant causes more severe illness or that the vaccines wouldn't work against it, officials say.

A spokesperson for PHE said: "All appropriate public health interventions are being undertaken, including additional contact tracing and targeted testing.

"Where cases have been identified, additional follow-up of cases, testing of contacts and targeted case finding will limit the spread of variants."

An update from PHE is expected later today.

The eight-year-old raptor was found on 7 May with injuries which meant she was unable to fly, police said.

The bird was rescued and X-rayed by a local falconry specialist vet, Mark Naguib, who found a number of shotgun pellets throughout the bird’s body, according to North Yorkshire Police

Wildlife rehabilitator Jean Thorpe is now caring for the bird in order to help it recover.

PC Sarah Ward said: "Peregrine falcons are a protected species and it is shocking that anyone would target one in this cruel and callous way.

“Our county should be a haven for birds of prey and this type of cruelty will not be tolerated."

Jack Ashton-Booth from the RSPB, said: "We are appalled at this deliberate and illegal attack on a protected peregrine falcon.

"The bird was riddled with shot, including one piece lodged in its head. Incredibly, it is still alive but it’s touch and go."

The area is one of six areas of concern in England where surge testing and jabs will be expanded to combat the spread of the Indian Covid variant.

Jason McCartney, MP for Colne Valley, which covers part of Huddersfield, said: "It's a concern, but nothing to be alarmed about.

"Our case rate is above the national average, but hospitalisations are still very low and we haven't had any Covid deaths in our local hospitals over the past week.

"We've had a handful of Indian variant cases, so are going to roll out extra testing in the community and make available extra vaccinations for those that are already eligible."

Mr McCartney said more than 200,000 people in Kirklees have had their first jabs and over 50% of those have had their second jab.

He added: "That's way ahead of the national average for that and we really want to stress that getting your jabs can protect your family, your friends and your community."

  16. Church replaces ancient carvings with inspiring women sculpturespublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

An East Yorkshire church is to replace its crumbling medieval carvings with sculptures of inspiring women to honour their "extraordinary" achievements.

    St Mary's Chutrch

Many of the stone sculptures at St Mary's Church in Beverley, are now unrecognisable.

Carvings of Queen Elizabeth II, feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and nurse Mary Seacole are among the notable women set to replace them.

Rev Rebecca Lumley, vicar of St Mary's, said they would "help to inspire the next generation".

Clay prototypes of the women are currently being created, with the church aiming for the stone versions to be ready for public viewing by November.

"Pioneering women" who worked in traditionally male-dominated arenas including maths, the sciences and engineering, were prioritised.

The proposal, which was approved by the Church of England's consistory court, also stated some women "must have local connections" and "there must be BAME representation".

Rev Lumley, said: "We were very aware that too often the ways people are represented in church architecture doesn't reflect the reality of everyday life - a lot of the carvings are men and there's very few women."

  17. Young West Yorkshire tennis players get tips from Timpublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 20 May 2021

    BBC Radio Leeds

Children from West Yorkshire schools have been getting tips from British tennis star Tim Henman.

    Tim Henman

He visited Ackworth School in Pontefract to mark the start of his foundation's "Finding Your Spark" campaign, which aims to help disadvantaged children from around the country.

Tim said: "I was very lucky, when I was growing up I got the chance to play tennis, and I got a scholarship, and I felt very fortunate for that. And on the back of the last 15, 16 months, I think it's been very challenging for so many people; I think those opportunities have been less and less."

The Tim Henman Foundation is one of a number of charities tennis governing body LTA is supporting to help people deal with the effects of the pandemic.

So has Tim's visit inspired the children to aim for Wimbledon?

Amelia, a pupil at South Kirkby Academy, isn't entirely convinced: "I'm not sure, because there are a lot of different jobs I'd like to do when I'm older - join the Army, play football, and I'd also like to play tennis."
