Steve Russell, Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust's chief executive, said it happened as he was walking home from work after Tuesday's match.

A woman slurred at him she was "proud to be white and British because we're better than people like you", he said.

Mr Russell added: "I was quite taken aback by how I felt. I felt really surprised and suddenly felt very lonely. It was particularly unpleasant."

Mr Russell said he posted details of what had happened to him on his Twitter feed, external because he wanted to draw attention to the issue.

"There is a broader point. This isn't entirely unusual, in fact it's not unusual. It happens to many people too often."

He added that what happened after the England v Germany match reminded him of one of the first such incidents he had faced when his parents had taken him to London.

"There'd been a football match and a supporter asked my dad where he'd got me from", he said.

Loi Nguyen (pictured), was last seen leaving his home in Bingley at 13:00 on Monday 31 May. Despite a nationwide appeal last month he's not been seen since.

He is described as 5ft 1in tall, of slim build with short black hair and brown eyes.

When last seen, the teenager is thought to have been wearing black shoes, a blue shirt, grey trousers and a light blue jacket.

Det Ch Insp Andy Farrell said: "It's more than a month since our last confirmed sighting of Loi, and we continue to be concerned for his welfare.

"It was initially thought he'd travelled to the West Midlands area or South Yorkshire, but these inquiries proved to be unsuccessful.

Anyone who sees Loi or who has information about his whereabouts is being urged to contact police immediately.

  5. Redundancy fear as UK furlough scheme starts to wind downpublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 1 July 2021

Employers will have to shoulder more of the costs of furlough from today as the government starts to wind down its flagship job support scheme.

With about 1.5 million workers still on furlough, the change will affect thousands of firms across the country.

Staff will continue to receive 80% of their wages, but employers will pay part of that for the first time.

Leeds businessman and nightclub owner Terry George said he would have to lay off workers because of the changes to furlough, with around 30% of his staff still on the scheme.

"We are concerned this is going to be something that we can't afford to pay people out of a pot that has no money coming in," he told Radio 4's Today programme.

"We're going to have to lose some staff. I think the most obvious thing would be to extend the furlough in its full form."

  9. North Yorks Police 999 calls top New Year's Eve ratepublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 1 July 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Police in North Yorkshire are receiving the highest number of emergency calls since records began – with the force currently answering more calls a day than it does on New Year’s Eve, it's been revealed.

    Police emergency call handler

North Yorkshire Police says its operators have seen the highest ever number of 999 calls this month, and a significant increase in calls to the non-emergency 101 line.

The rise is thought to be caused by an increase in visitors to the county and the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Pannone said: "Typically we are getting about 300 calls to 999 a day in June.

"On New Year’s Eve in 2020 we received 293 calls. New Year’s Eve is always one of the busiest days of the year.

"To be consistently getting above what we get on New Year’s Eve on a daily basis shows the level of calls we are getting."

North Yorkshire Police aims to answer 90% of 999 calls within 10 seconds but the force is not currently reaching that target.

Eight new staff have been recruited and the North Yorkshire force is planning to create six more full-time roles in the force control room to tackle the increase in calls, it says.

  18. Covid-19 hospital rates in North Yorkshire 'not rising'published at 18:07 British Summer Time 30 June 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Hospital admissions in North Yorkshire due to Covid-19 are not rising as quickly as in previous waves, according to the county's Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

    Covid figures graphicImage source, NYCC

Amanda Bloor, accountable officer for the North Yorkshire CCG, has said the number of patients in the county’s hospitals is not mirroring the spike in infection rates.

Twenty-two patients with Covid-19 are in hospital at the moment, compared with 23 last week. The number includes two patients in Harrogate Hospital and six in York.

However, the infection rate in North Yorkshire is still rising - with almost 900 cases recorded in the last week. The rate per 100,000 people now stands at 144 - up from 45 two weeks ago.

Mrs Bloor said: "The data I'm seeing suggests we are not seeing the same rates of hospitalisation per community infection rates as we were seeing in previous waves.

"I think this is most likely due to the vaccination programme and the fact that having two doses of a vaccine protects people from serious illness."

Anyone who has not yet had their first jab is being encouraged to come forward as soon as possible.

  20. 'Peer pressure' stopping young men getting vaccinated - GPpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 30 June 2021

Peer pressure may be a reason why more young men are contracting Covid-19, an East Yorkshire GP has said.

    Dr Zoe Norris

The number of cases in young men in North East Lincolnshire has increased, and the NHS is now encouraging more in that group to book their jab.

Dr Zoe Norris (pictured), Bridlington's primary care clinical director, told BBC Radio Humberside: "Warehouse workers, construction sites, manual labourers - it's quite challenging in that environment to be the one saying, 'look we should be wearing masks and social distancing'.

"There's a degree of peer pressure and I wonder how much of that taps into us seeing this surge in younger men."
