1. Man punched, kicked, slashed and hit by car in attackpublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

    Police are hunting for three men after a man was punched, kicked, slashed with a knife and run over with a car in an attack in a village near York.

    The victim was attacked on Blind Lane, Deighton, at about 23:40 on 12 June.

    North Yorkshire Police said he was punched in the head by one of three occupants of a silver hatchback parked at a field entrance. As he walked away the car drove into him, throwing him on to a grass verge.

    Two of the occupants then left the vehicle and further assaulted the victim by kicking him twice and slashing his face with what's though to be a Stanley knife, officers added.

    The victim was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

    Two of of the occupants are described as male with one thought to have a strong Middlesbrough accent.

    Anyone who saw the parked car or witnessed the attack is being urged to contact police.

    Scarborough’s coronavirus rate has tripled in less than a week after more than 70 new cases were recorded over the weekend.

    The borough had been averaging 29 positive tests a week last week, but in the past seven days 102 new cases have been recorded.

    On Saturday and Sunday alone 39 and 32 new cases respectively were reported in the borough.

    Scarborough’s seven-day rate per 100,000 had been the lowest in the county on Friday at 36, and as low as 26 during the week, but has now risen to 94, its highest level since early February.

    Mobile testing facilities will be available in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey this week for anyone with symptoms to get tested.

  3. Princess Anne to open Lincoln emergency services centrepublished at 09:23 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

    The Princess Royal is due to officially open a joint emergency services centre in Lincolnshire later.

    The South Park station for ambulance, fire and police teams in Lincoln has been running since the end of 2019, but the Covid pandemic delayed the opening ceremony.

    Princess Anne is also expected to visit the St John Ambulance headquarters in Lincoln.

    Councillor Martin Hill, from Lincolnshire County Council, said: "It's a great morale- booster to get a royal visit to look at the good work that's been going on in Lincolnshire, not just in emergency response but also our response to the pandemic."

  4. Police to use newly-opened Sheffield community basepublished at 08:59 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

    Police officers will use a newly-opened community centre in a deprived area of Sheffield as a base for their work.

    A team of officers was set up in Page Hall in October over concerns about anti-social behaviour and crime, South Yorkshire Police said.

    Now an empty property on Robey Street, renovated by Sheffield City Council, will be used by several agencies.

    Sgt Tony Cartlidge said: "We know this area gets a lot of scrutiny, but since starting work last October we really have made progress.

    "My officers are down here as much as possible, talking to people, dealing with incidents and being visible."

    The centre will also be used by Sheffield City Council's environmental teams, responsible for dealing with litter and noise problems, as well as for council advice sessions.

    A man has been arrested after a cyclist was killed in a crash involving a car in East Yorkshire.

    It happened at about 21:00 BST on Saturday on the A1033, between Ottringham and Patrington in Holderness, said Humberside Police.

    A Nissan Duke hit the bike and ended up in a ditch, said the force. The male rider died at the scene.

    A man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving over the legal limit.

    He remains in custody and officers are appealing for any information.
