The device (pictured below) was found on Thursday morning at a new housing development on Rawcliffe Road, in Goole, near to junction 36 of the M62.
Army bomb disposal experts say the device is "live" and are making plans to detonate it "within the next 24 hours", according to Humberside Police.
The force say in order to carry out the controlled explosion a cordon around the area will need to be expanded, including closing the M62 in both directions between junctions 35 and 37 and a stretch of the A614.
The closure is due to come into effect from 20:00 and will remain in place "until the device is successfully detonated".
A police spokesperson said people living nearby are asked to remain indoors from 20:00 onwards and businesses within the cordon will be asked to close until the work has been completed.

An 11-year-old boy from Hebden Bridge is planning to spend his summer holiday walking from his home in West Yorkshire all the way to Westminster to raise awareness of climate change.
Jude wants to raise awareness of a campaign to introduce a "carbon tax" on companies that create the most greenhouse gasses.
He has spent the last few weeks sending letters to MPs along the route.
He said: "Pretty much all of the MPs have responded. Some said they're on holiday and can't meet me but a few of them say they're going to.
"My local MP is Craig Whittaker and we've already met up and I've told him about my walk."
Jude's mum, Sarah, told BBC Radio Leeds she is "really proud" of him and is looking forward to supporting him on his challenge.
Jude says he expects the walk to take about two weeks and says he has been doing a number of practice walks to prepare.

There's a sense of euphoria and celebration, even before the music has started at Tramlines.
For most people here this is the first event they've been to since the start of 2020.
With an hour to go before the first band takes to the main stage, thousands of people are already here. They're laughing and joking with their friends, drinking together and hugging each other.
Many have told me how excited they've been leading up to today, with people travelling to Sheffield from Leeds, Wakefield and Glasgow.
One young group said today marked a turning point in the pandemic for them, where they felt it was "the start of living again".
Nigel Hall, 54, from Doncaster, (above left) has come to the festival with his son Matthew, 18.
He told me he was "glad to be back" and was so far feeling "comfortable" being at an event like this.
"It's outside, you can always stop at the back so already I feel more comfortable just being here," he said.
"It's definitely the first step towards normality. It's a real breakthrough moment for me."
Natasha Boulton (above left), 20, from Leeds, said she was "excited" to be able to meet up with friends at the festival but was taking time to adjust to the lack of restrictions.
"It's been hard not seeing anyone in so long," she said.
"In the back of my mind I still feel like I should be wearing a mask. It's hard to get used to it."

Read MoreA "chubby" woman in a wheelchair grabbed a three-year-old girl in a buggy before hitting her on the head three times, say police.
North Yorkshire officers say the assault, which happened on Skipton Road in Harrogate, began when the woman, who was using an electric wheelchair, stopped the mum who was pushing her daughter.
After speaking, she then pinched the girl's ear "causing fluid to appear" before striking her.
The incident happened close to Grove Road Primary School just before 10:30 on Wednesday.
A police spokesperson said they were keen to hear from members of the public to understand "the full circumstances" of what happened.
Police describe the woman in the wheelchair as white, of a “chubby” build and aged between 40 and 50 years old.
She had short brown hair, wore dark glasses and pink T-shirt, the spokesperson added.
