In April a fire on the moorland near Huddersfield burned for three days and caused "hundreds of thousands of pounds" of damage.

A spokesperson for the National Trust said the extra patrols came after volunteers had spotted two barbecues on the moor despite a year-round ban on barbecues and fires in the area.

Countryside manager for the National Trust, Craig Best said, “Our ranger team have stepped up their patrols, but they can’t be everywhere at once.

“The last fire is fresh in everyone’s mind. The damage caused to wildlife and vegetation was devastating, and we want to ensure that there are no more fires this summer.

"Whilst the weather stays warm and dry, the risk of fire on Marsden Moor is high."

History enthusiast James Rhodes told BBC Radio Leeds: "She was a teacher before she went into medicine, so she was a passionate campaigner for education and was very highly regarded.

"She was also heavily in the Leeds suffrage movement before her death in 1908."

It comes as Pugneys Country Park in Wakefield (pictured above) reopened after a man's body was recovered from the lake on Monday.

The Canal & River Trust says the consequences of cooling off by going for a dip "can be devastating", and is encouraging people to follow its advice:

    • Canal and river water will be really cold, and it could bring on cold water shock
    • Canals can be shallow and you could hurt yourself if you jump in
    • Lounge in the shade of waterside trees, rather than get tangled in waterway reeds
    • Have an ice lolly or a cold drink at a waterside café to cool down instead

As well as the incident in Wakefield, a man's body was pulled from a lake at Crookes Valley Park in Sheffield, and another from the River Ouse in York.
