West Yorkshire MPs are calling on the government to do more to help British people stuck in Afghanistan.

    Hilary Benn MP

Labour’s Hilary Benn, the MP for Leeds Central, and Imran Hussain, who represents Bradford East, say some of their constituents were left behind when the last evacuation flights left almost a week ago.

Imran Hussain says he is "extremely concerned" about people he is helping.

Hilary Benn told BBC Radio Leeds: “We’ve got about 130 to 140 cases. In one case, the spouse of a British national is trying to flee the country with their five children, who are themselves British.

“We’ve got to honour our obligations and we’ve got to honour our word.”

The Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, is currently on a visit to Pakistan, as part of efforts to help British people leave Afghanistan. It comes, after he said he was hopeful evacuation flights might be able to resume.

The 16-year-old girl was reportedly walking along Langsett Road in Hillsborough at about 16:00 BST on 13 August when a man grabbed her from behind and put his hands up the back of her top, South Yorkshire Police said.

She turned around and pushed him away and he then left the scene, the force added.

Officers have released an e-fit of the man they are tracing. He is described as being in his early 20s, skinny, with light brown hair and stubble on his face. He also has uneven teeth, several of which may be missing.

The force has appealed for anyone who recognises him or have any information to get in touch.

The two-day event starting on 14 October will see some of the city's well-known buildings and landmarks lit up with colourful light projections - and this year's theme is nature and climate change.

More than 40 installations and artworks will be on show including a large-scale replica of the Earth by artist Luke Jerram and an illumination of lightning bolts on the front of Leeds Civic Hall by artist Seb Lee-Delisle, the city council said.

Last year a considerably slimmed-down festival saw lasers mounted on seven city centre buildings because of coronavirus and social distancing rules.

Organisers say this year's event "will mark a return to a more familiar format" but the programme has been adjusted to allow for additional safety measures as it expects to attract thousands of visitors.

    Quote Message

It’s inspiring to know that this year’s installations will be carrying such a powerful message, encouraging all of us to consider our impact on the planet and what we can each do to make Leeds a cleaner and greener place. Light Night will also have added significance this year, coming after such an incredibly challenging time for the city."

A train travelling from Settle to Carlisle hit the animal at about 09:15 BST on Friday near Ribblehead in the Yorkshire Dales, operator Northern said.

The company has warned of disruptions as the suspended services are replaced by buses.

Northern's regional director, Tony Baxter, thanked customers for their patience as efforts continued to "remove the bull from the line".

    Quote Message

The remote location and nature of the incident means it has been difficult to get the line up and running again. We continue to work with colleagues from Network Rail to return services to the line as quickly as possible.”

  7. Lincolnshire animal charity wound up after 'serious mismanagement'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 3 September 2021

A Lincolnshire animal charity has been wound up and its chair banned from managing charities after a watchdog found "serious mismanagement" at the organisation.

    Alternative Animal Sancutary

The Alternative Animal Sanctuary, near Boston, offered permanent care to abandoned and neglected animals across England and Wales.

But serious concerns were raised and after a four year enquiry, the Charity Commission found the organisation was being run with what it described as "a complete lack of basic financial controls".

The regulator said the charity raised more than £10m between 2008 and 2020 but had only received £1.8m of that donated income.

Two of the trustees, including the chair, have been disqualified for up to 15 years.

More than £400,000 of the charity's remaining funds have been redistributed to other similar charities in Lincolnshire, the Charity Commission said.

    Quote Message

The trustees’ conduct and the chair’s clear abuse of their position at the Alternative Animal Sanctuary goes against everything we associate with charity. It is right that those responsible for wrongdoing have been disqualified from serving as trustees.

  10. Family reunited with WWI medals found at car boot salepublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 3 September 2021

A pair of World War One medals have been reunited with the family of the soldier who earned them after they were found at a car boot sale.

    World War One medals

The medals, belonging to army medic Percy Richmond Thompson, were found in Bridlington, with the buyers launching a hunt to find his relatives.

After a newspaper appeal, his last living descendant, Catherine Davies was traced in Wales where she travelled from her home to collect them.

Mr Thompson, who was born in Carnaby, East Yorkshire, in 1892, was a medic who served in France during the conflict and was injured in action. After the war he worked on the railways in Hull before his death in 1974.

He married Mrs Davies' second cousin, twice removed.

His medals were found at the Strawberry Fields boot sale and subsequently handed to the Hull-based Prince of Wales' Own Regiment of Yorkshire Association, which helped trace his family.

    Catherine Davies

Ms Davies said she had to prove she was related to Mr Thompson.

"Although Percy had many brothers and sisters, nobody came forward for these medals," she added.

A number of people have been questioned in connection with her disappearance, but no charges have ever been brought.

The shell was found by a member of the public who was using a metal detector yesterday on Walmgate Stray between Fulford Road and the University of York.

North Yorkshire Police said the device was going to be detonated "in situ as this is safer than taking it away".

The controlled explosion was scheduled to take place at 06:30 this morning.

Harrogate has so far welcomed four families under a government scheme targeted at Afghans who worked for the UK military and are fleeing the country because they are under serious threat from the Taliban.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Harrogate council leader Richard Cooper said: “Four families have arrived under the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP), one in Knaresborough and three in Harrogate. They are settling in well.

“We have been asked to accommodate three more families under ARAP."

Mr Cooper previously said Harrogate would take in “more than our quota” of refugees who were “in need of and deserve our assistance”.

He has now added: "The details of the long-term Afghan Citizens’ Resettlement Scheme have not been released by the government.

“When they are, we will work with North Yorkshire County Council and Migration Yorkshire on the programme."

  20. Right-wing extremist to have sentence reviewedpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 2 September 2021

A right-wing extremist who was given a suspended jail term for possessing a bomb-making instruction manual is to have his sentence reviewed.

Ben John, 21, of Addison Drive, Lincoln, received a 24-month prison term, suspended for two years, after he was convicted of having a copy of The Anarchist Cookbook on a computer hard drive.

The offence, under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act, carries a maximum sentence of 15 years' imprisonment.

During his sentencing at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday, the former student was instructed by a judge to read classic novels including Pride and Prejudice, according to media reports.

Anti-fascist group Hope Not Hate has sent an open letter asking the Attorney General's Office to review his sentence and assess whether it was unduly lenient.

In the letter, chief executive Nick Lowles said: "These sorts of lenient sentences risk encouraging other young people to access and share terrorist and extremist content because they will not fear the repercussions of their actions."

    Quote Message

A suspended sentence and a suggested reading list of English classics for a terror conviction is unduly lenient for a crime of this nature. This sentence is sending a message that violent right-wing extremists may be treated leniently by the courts. That is a dangerous message to send when the far right poses the fastest growing terror threat today."

    Nick Lowles, Hope Not Hate

A spokesman for the Attorney General's Office confirmed it had received a request.

He said the former student's case would be examined under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme and a decision would be made within 28 days.
