This is Bradford's "time to shine", according to the council leader after it was announced the area had progressed to the next round of UK City of Culture 2025.
The city, and surrounding district, is one of eight places on the long list.
Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe told BBC Radio Leeds: "I think the whole district's coming together and if we were to win this, then it brings the economy together. It starts to give people a confidence about the city and it makes people reassess Bradford."
The Yorkshire city, along with the seven other areas on the list, will now get £40,000 to work on its official bid.
Shanaz Gulzar, who is chairing the Bradford 2025 campaign, says: "Bradford is often told what it is. This is a moment for Bradford to tell its own story, to demonstrate that it's a city of the future."
The team will now take its roadshow , external(pictured above) to every ward in the area between now and the next stage in January, when the bid is officially submitted.
May McQuade, from the Bradford 2025 team, says: "We're really buzzing. I think we've got here by having conversations, by connecting.
"We're a young city, there are young people all over the district making music and starting businesses and it's about trying to give those young people the opportunities to go further."
Wakefield had also expressed an interest in the title, but did not make make it through to the next stage. The council is now planning its own year of culture in 2024.

Abdullah Balouchi, 20, was found on Peel Street with serious stab injuries last October and died later in hospital.

Friends and family said they wanted to mark the anniversary of his death in a positive way, with Abdullah's father, Farouk, saying it was wonderful to see the community coming together.
"It gives you a nice feeling about taking back this area, and hopefully Abdullah's legacy will be that something like this never happens in our community again," he said.

The pair, aged 17 and 15, have been remanded in custody following an appearance at Lincoln Youth Court on Monday.
They are due to appear at Lincoln Crown Court on Monday 11 October.
