Mr S Rashid, owner of Shawarma Town on Frodingham Road in the town, was found to have failed to ensure that adequate procedures were in place to control pests in the case heard before magistrates in Grimsby.

North Lincolnshire Council say during an inspection officers discovered the premises in an unhygienic condition.

The retailer said it is looking to recruit new staff for its distribution centres and manufacturing sites across the country ahead of the festive season.

Food suppliers and trade bodies have stressed that the Christmas period could be challenging due to labour shortages and disruption further down the supply chain.

This year's Christmas festivities are also anticipated to be busier than usual as customers try to make up for last year's restricted celebrations and hold multiple gatherings with their friends and family, Morrisons said.

Rivals including Sainsbury's and John Lewis have already laid out plans to hire thousands of temporary staff for the festive period.

Morrisons said jobs available include warehouse and production operatives, pickers, packers and fork-lift truck drivers, among others.

The firm will provide full training for all positions and said no prior experience is therefore required.

The recruitment drive comes just days after US private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice agreed a £7bn takeover of the chain.

Heavy rain in November 2000, June 2007 and November 2019, led to heavy flooding in South Yorkshire.

Water covered the tracks at Rotherham Central railway station in 2019 (above) and the new £3.2m plan aims to try and ensure the town centre and station are “more resilient to future flood events”.

If approved, the works will include a 90m wall between Ickles Lock Boathouse to Ickles Lock Railway Bridge, two concrete crossings, and a section of the level crossing at Brinsworth Street will be raised.

On Brinsworth Street, south of the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Canal, 120m of new flood defence will be installed, including a reinforced concrete flood wall, highway drainage and a “full width highway reconstruction to raise highway levels”.

The planning application has been lodged as part of a borough-wide flood alleviation scheme, which extends along a three-mile (5km) stretch of the River Don through the Templeborough, town centre and Parkgate areas of Rotherham.

It is hoped that the scheme will reduce the risk of flooding to around 400 existing businesses, as well as roads, rail and the tram/train network.

The scheme would be jointly funded by European Regional Development Fund money and the council’s town centre investment fund.

Senior councillors in Bradford have approved the £6m plans for the oversubscribed Bingley Grammar School.

It is hoped a brand new block for up to 24 pupils with special educational needs (SEND) will also help ease pressure on other similar local services.

Headteacher Luke Weston says: “We feel that we’ve been doing a very good job of late, but things are very tight at Bingley and this will make an immense improvement to the services we offer to all the kids we have, and especially the SEND numbers, which are rising.”

Councillor Imran Khan, who oversees education at Bradford council, says: “The new specialist SEND provision is a great opportunity to provide modern facilities for pupils with special educational needs in a well-established location."

Funding will come from the Basic Needs programme, which is money given to the council every year by the government to help ensure there are enough mainstream school places for children in the area.

There will now be a consultation on the expansion work, to ensure the local community agrees.
