Sq Ldr George "Johnny" Johnson, is the last British survivor of the Dambusters raid which destroyed important German dams. He was a bomb-aimer during the daring operation.

He was made an MBE in 2017 after a long-running campaign which was supported by celebrities such as TV presenter Carol Vorderman.

Mr Johnson was 22 when he took part in the 1943 operation, which used experimental bouncing bombs carried by Lancaster bombers which flew from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire.

The raid targeted dams in the Ruhr Valley in Germany's industrial heartland, releasing huge quantities of water and disrupting the German war effort.

Mr Johnson, said being a Dambuster was a "thrilling experience" and he felt "honoured to have had the chance to take part".

"We don't know how it started, it's still burning now nine hours later."

Mr Pern added: "I think we'll probably be out of business for about a year for the main dining area.

"The new part should be ok, so we'll be able to function in a fashion, somehow."

He also praised his staff and local helpers saying :"The staff did a brilliant job, grabbed a hose from the cellar, but with straw and beams which are 800 years old it didn't stand a chance really.

"Anybody and everybody has done as much as they can do, even the local farmers are here shifting all the straw away to make the roads clear."
