  15. Promises on better rail services 'outlandish spin' - council leaderpublished at 16:26 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2021

Government promises to improve rail services have been described as "outlandish spin" by the leader of Sheffield Council.

Terry Fox said it was "outrageous" the government axed the eastern leg of HS2 and reneged on promises to improve connectivity and capacity for South Yorkshire rail.

The Labour Leader said: "This Government says Sheffield will see benefits sooner under its Integrated Rail Plan than they would've if HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail had been approved, but this is outlandish spin and doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

"The government is being disingenuous saying Sheffield is going to get faster trains and increased capacity.

"What it means is running longer trains on the long distance services at the expense of more local capacity, negating the whole point of HS2 in the first place, and making local capacity issues worse."

Last week Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said communities across the north of England and the Midlands will benefit much earlier than planned as ministers take a fresh look at HS2.

Mr Shapps said the government will build a better railway, provide similar or better services to almost every destination and improve the "outdated vision" drawn up for HS2 a decade ago.

Conservative MP Julian Sturdy led a debate which heard Great British Railways, a new organisation being set up to own and manage the lines, will be based outside London.

The new state-owned body will set timetables and prices, sell tickets in England and manage rail infrastructure.

Mr Sturdy said: "York was always and remains and should remain the home of the railways.

"This should be recognised by locating the new headquarters of Great British Rail in our great city."

The government says the process is at a very early stage, but will recognise towns and cities with a strong railway history.
