Legislation which allowed council meetings to be held virtually from April 2020 expired in May 2021, meant councils had to hire large venues to ensure social distancing guidelines were met.

Meetings with fewer staff can be accommodated in the usual venue at the town hall, but full council – which requires all 59 councillors plus staff to attend – can’t safely be held there.

Since May, five full council meetings have been held away from the town hall - four at the Magna centre and one at Dinnington Resource Centre.

The cost of £29,055.74 has been met by the government’s Covid Grant., external

Earlier this week, Chris Read, leader of Rotherham Council, called for the government to allow councils to hold virtual meetings again, in light of rising infection rates.

Mr Read said: "It’s much safer to hold all our meetings virtually at the current time.

"There is a cost and a complication for us going to Magna each time which isn’t ideal.

"But when the government’s telling people to work from home where they can, it seems perverse to say councillors all have to go in a room all together - we shouldn’t have to do it, and the government could easily fix that."

Mr Read said he believes the government are expected to come to a view about virtual meetings "soon".

  15. Prime Minister 'shameless' says West Yorkshire mayorpublished at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2022

    Gemma Dillon
    Political Reporter

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin has told BBC Radio Leeds she thinks the Prime Minister is "shameless" after he admitted going to a party in the Downing Street garden during the first coronavirus lockdown.

Boris Johnson has apologised for the way he handled the event in May 2020 but says he "believed implicitly" that it was a work engagement.

Speaking on the Message the Mayor phone-in, Tracy Brabin said: "What's leadership about, but what you do?

"We all saw the Queen, when she lost her lifelong partner, alone at a funeral doing the right thing, showing leadership by example - and that's what we've not had from Boris Johnson."

Meanwhile, some members of the Conservative Party in West Yorkshire have called for Mr Johnson to resign.

Mr Sheard said: "In 2019 I had the utmost support for the prime minister but he's not made it easy for himself.

"My support for him went on a downward slope when we found out about the Christmas party. I think the only honourable thing he can do is resign."

And Lord Timothy Kirkhope of Harrogate - a former Leeds MP and Yorkshire and Humber MEP - says Mr Johnson should consider his position.

Lord Kirkhope said: "I do think we are coming to a point when he may be well advised to put his position up - for the Members of Parliament in House of Commons and the wider party to make a decision on whether he should continue or not."

    Welcome to Hull sign

The signs on Bricknell Avenue and Boothferry Road, which say "Welcome to Hull", now also carry: "We know we aren't perfect, but at least we aren't Leeds."

The slogan, which is the work of an unidentified prankster, has gained a mixed response online after photos were posted of the new-look signs.

One Hull resident called it "a bit of fun with no harm intended", but another said visitors didn't need to be welcomed with "snide remarks" about another city.

Responding to BBC Look North presenter Peter Levy on Twitter, Hull City Council said: "We didn't include this line on the sign, it has been added by someone afterwards, so we suspect it's a bit of mischievous fun."
