Officials at East Riding of Yorkshire Council say tests on beaches in the north of the area have shown "no link" to illnesses in dogs.

    Bridlington South Beach

Multiple cases of severe vomiting and diarrhoea have been reported by veterinary businesses in the Bridlington area which prompted the authority to investigate.

Kirsty Salisbury, general manager (Coastal), said: "We are aware of reports on social media and in the local press of dogs becoming unwell following visiting areas of local beaches in the northern part of our coastline.

"From reports from local veterinary surgeries, the illness they are seeing within dogs and the tests carried out have not provided any direct links with the use of beaches."

The authority's Coastal Services team says regularly inspect the beaches for signs of any irregular occurrences and at present there is nothing unusual.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said it was aware of the incidents and was in contact with the Animal and Plant Health Agency.

The East Midlands Ambulance Service which covers Lincolnshire (including North and North East Lincolnshire), Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire says 60 military personnel will be responding to non-emergency patients due to increasing demand and staff having to isolate because of Covid-19.

They'll work alongside Urgent Care ambulance crew attending non-emergency patients and those who have already had medical investigations and require hospital treatment.

The move has been welcomed by the UK's largest trade union, Unison.

Gareth Eales, regional organiser, said: "It's hardly a surprise that the service has chosen to do this because the alternative is to cease operations and that isn't an option.

"Covid has just exacerbated the pressure already on our ambulance services, they were stretched before the pandemic and it wouldn't surprise me to see further personnel being brought in."

The military workers will have to complete a three-day training course with EMAS.

Ben Holdaway, director of operations at East Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "The introduction of military support has always been part of NHS plans in case of increased pressure, we are taking this proactive step now to safeguard the provision of a safe 999 service for our patients in the coming weeks."

Sinfield was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours last June.

Richard White from the MND Association said: "The OBE awarded to Kev is for services to Rugby League and charitable fund raising.

"So I think it's a clear acknowledgement not only of his standing in his sport but also the amazing work he's done in raising awareness of MND and raising funds to combat it and help those living with the disease."

On the pitch, Sinfield led the Rhinos to seven Super League titles and two Challenge Cup trophies, as well as captaining the England national team.

  10. Taxi prices could rise due to fuel price pressurespublished at 09:54 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2022

The cost of catching a taxi could increase in Harrogate because of soaring fuel prices and a drop in earnings for drivers during the Covid pandemic.

Harrogate cabbies say they've also taken further financial hits from rises in vehicle prices and parts, as well as the climbing cost of living.

One taxi driver told the council: "It's sometimes very difficult to strike the correct balance between what's a reasonable fare increase and keeping our loyal customers happy.

"We've witnessed in the past six months an increase of more than 30% in our fuel costs alone and there's a lot of talk that fuel could reach £2 per litre by mid 2022."

The request from taxi drivers is for a 5% rise on the running mile and waiting times of journeys, as well as an increase in starting prices from £3.40 to £3.60.

Speaking ahead of a licensing meeting next Wednesday Gareth Bentley, licensing manager at Harrogate Borough Council, said a consultation on the proposed fare increase had been held with 500 taxi drivers.

He said the response rate was low with only 30 – or 6% – taking part.

Mr Bentley added: "The setting of fares is a statutory duty placed upon the council and it is the council’s responsibility to strike a balance between setting a fare that is acceptable to the customer and to the taxi driver."

  11. Council went 17 years without paying for its gas supplypublished at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2022

An East Yorkshire council is facing a large bill after it was discovered it hasn't paid for its gas supply for 17 years.

    Gas meter

Beverley Town Council launched an investigation after discovering it "does not have a gas supplier, despite using and receiving gas since 2004".

The problem was uncovered when a boiler broke down in November at its offices in Well Lane.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) told the authority that there "had never been a registered gas supply".

In a report presented to the council, the company confirmed it would seek back payment for the fuel used.

"NGN have confirmed that they will use standard rates provided to them by the gas regulator, Ofgem, to calculate a back payment going back to 2004 for unpaid for gas," the report said.

The East Yorkshire council is contacting an energy firm to sign up for a gas supply.

It's asked one of its councillors, David Tucker, to investigate the "serious issue" and his report is due by the end of the month.

  18. Sheffield Stagecoach drivers to suspend strikepublished at 17:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2022

Striking bus drivers in Sheffield have agreed to suspend action later this week following an agreement over a pay dispute, bus company Stagecoach has said.

    Stagecoach strikers

The strike began earlier this month with drivers in South Yorkshire claiming they were the "lowest paid in the region".

"Flexibility on both sides" has resulted in agreement on a way forward for pay, according to Stagecoach.

In a statement, Stagecoach Yorkshire confirmed it had "welcomed further positive talks with Unite, where agreement has been made on a way forward for pay covering employees at its Sheffield depots - Ecclesfield and Holbrook."

It added: "The agreement with Unite means that all strike action impacting services from these depots will be suspended from Thursday 13 January."

Employees at Ecclesfield and Holbrook will be given the opportunity on Wednesday to decide on which of two new proposed pay deals they would like to take forward to a formal ballot, which will then take place at the end of the week.

Bus drivers in Barnsley and Rotherham suspended strike action on Monday after receiving a new pay offer from Stagecoach, the Unite union said.
