  18. Biggest city centres suffering the most from pandemicpublished at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2022

    BBC Radio Leeds

Businesses in Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford have missed out on more than half a year's worth of sales during the pandemic, according to new research from Centre for Cities, external.

    Briggate, Leeds

The report, which has looked at 52 city and town centres across the UK, says larger centres have been worst hit.

The organisation suggests smaller towns and cities in Yorkshire have performed better - Huddersfield, for example, has only missed out on 12 weeks' worth of potential sales.

However, it is expected places which are "economically stronger" - such as bigger cities - will recover more quickly, once workers return to the office.

Andrew Carter, chief executive of Centre for Cities, said: "While the pandemic has been a tough time for all high streets, it has levelled down more prosperous cities and towns in Yorkshire.

“The bigger concern is for economically weaker places – primarily in the north and Midlands – where Covid-19 has actually paused their long-term decline."

Mr Carter added: "Many of these places are in the so-called red wall so there is a political imperative for the government to act fast, as well as an economic one."
