Up to 10,000 people in York will be unable to access NHS dental treatment after surgeries said they would scale back provision, an MP has said.
Two practices in the city have announced changes to the way they operate, with one claiming it can't find dentists to replace those who've left, despite advertising the vacancies.
In an email to patients, Perfect Smile Clinic in Acomb (pictured below), said it was left with two dentists and two dental therapists, down from six dentists before the pandemic.
The email read: "We're concerned we are unable to look after all our patients on the NHS safely."
Currently, over 6,000 patients do not have an allocated NHS dentist at the practice.
The practice says it has a further 2,000 patients on its waiting list who staff have never seen.
Healthwatch York Manager Sian Balsom said she'd also been contacted by several patients from York Dental Practice in Clifton Moor, who said they had been told they would no longer be offered NHS treatment.
York Central Labour MP Rachael Maskell (pictured top) said: "We’re really worried about this putting further pressure on people – we’ve already got people travelling 40 miles to see a dentist, with other people talking about going overseas."
Ms Maskell this week called for the creation of a new National Dental Service to bring dental services fully back into the NHS, as well as a new dental school for York.

Wakefied's famous rhubarb festival, external is back for the first time since before the pandemic.
Over the weekend, visitors have the chance to try and to buy numerous varieties of the pink vegetable.
More than 50 chalets on the cathedral precinct and the Bull Ring are selling rhubarb-infused pies, crumbles, gin, beer and even sausage rolls. There's also entertainment and music, as well as a variety of workshops.
Wakefield councillor Michael Graham says: "Wakefield is famously part of the Yorkshire 'rhubarb triangle'. It's in our DNA, steeped in our heritage and we absolutely love celebrating it."
Brand new for 2022 is a foodie trail with over 30 cafes, restaurants and bars across the city serving up rhubarb-themed dishes.
Janet Oldroyd-Hume's family has been growing "forced" rhubarb in Rothwell for five generations and is selling pies and crumbles.
Ms Oldroyd-Hume says: "We block all the light so the roots get stronger and stronger, then it can take three men to lift the plant on to a trailer."
The festival runs between 10:00 and 17:00 Friday 25 February and 10:00 and 16:00 on Sunday 27 February.
