RMT anger over removal of taxi 'privileges'published at 17:49

BBC Local LiveThe RMT union has accused Leicester's mayor of acting like "a bully in a playground" as he reviews and removes taxi drivers' privileges.
If follows their protesting against a council pilot scheme where drivers will get points for things like parking on double yellow lines and not displaying their licence badge properly.

BBC Local LiveThe city mayor is to take away taxi parking spots on Slater Street and Conduit Street as a review of "privileges" given to the hackney cab drivers.
It follows the three protests that brought the city to a stand-still and the announcement of two more protests next week.
Sir Peter Soulsby says: "They are a particularly privileged bunch these Hackney Cab drivers and they have, by behaving in they way they have been behaving, been putting that privilege at risk.
"So what we're looking at now is the beginnings of making them realise they cannot take these privileges for granted, particularly the free parking they get around our city in addition to the taxi rank."

BBC Local LiveSome good news from the police next - police say burglaries in Leicestershire are at a 10-year low.
This year, the force has had a dedicated team of officers to deal with the traditional spike during October, November and December. So far, 85 arrests have been made.

This follows a pilot by Leicestershire Police where forensic evidence was only collected in attempted burglaries of even numbered houses.

Scaffolding firm fined for street collapsepublished at 17:11

BBC News OnlineCast your minds back to January when a large tower of scaffolding collapsed into Charles Street and closed it to traffic for most of the day.
As it came down it hit a passing bus, a parked van and two pedestrians who were lucky to escape with only minor injuries.
This week, the Leicester firm responsible for the scaffolding has been fined £8,000 in court after an investigation found workers hadn't properly secured the scaffolding or followed "a safe system of work".

Now, the mayor is removing taxi ranks around the railway station.
It follows the news yesterday that taxi drivers were going to hold two more protests next week - a static one on Tuesday and a go-slow on Thursday.

They say there are as many people in favour of the plans as there are against them.
Chris Banks, from RES, said: "You could just as easily say this project's causing a storm of support, there's just as much support being offered to this project as there is opposition.
"On the basis of that we still feel that the project is strong, it's on a very good site and we look forward to a full and thorough debate on it this evening."

Hundreds of people are expected to go to the council planning meeting on the "controversial" project.

He says: "This would wreck the current landscape here, which is beautiful, rolling landscape.
"It would do damage to the amenity of parks and gardens around here, Exton Park slightly over to the west, would have a very good view of them."
