An update now on the ongoing debate over a travellers' site in Waltham on the Wolds.

Melton Borough Council met last night to discuss a second application for land off Goadby Road but it was refused on grounds almost identical to those applied to the earlier application, in April 2014.

These reasons are that the land is considered an "unsustainable" location. It's claimed the caravans are only partially screened by hedgerows and are "readily visible" and "unsightly" in the countryside.

The proposed site is also deemed not suitable for the grazing of horses.

"It's understandable that people are getting frustrated, we're getting frustrated.

    BBC Local Live

Biffa, who have been getting the blame for the delay, say all waste has been collected and that they have tried their best to collect all the recycling as quickly as possible, including allocating additional vehicles and crew.

The firm said: "Biffa apologises for this frustrating situation, and is working hard to complete these missed collections.

"A number of rounds earlier this week could not be completed because of unexpectedly high volumes of recyclables and refuse put out by residents over the Christmas holiday period, so requiring more vehicle movements.

"This was compounded by the fact that these rounds were servicing properties that are the most distant from Biffa’s depot."

  16. Council writing to Biffa for failing to collect recyclingpublished at 09:21

Councillor Adam Clarke said: "They’ve clearly failed to do this, and in addition we’ve had to send out our own street cleansing teams to clear up the mess caused by this unacceptable delay.

“I am writing to Biffa for a full explanation and seeking a discussion with them with respect to compliance with the contract they have with us.”
