They're so inseparable, Robin even rides around with John in his car.

Their friendship began last winter and in that space of time Robin and John have built up a very good relationship and when John calls, Robin appears.

  13. How snail romance could help human geneticspublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC Local Live

Scientists at the University of Nottingham have been running their own dating program - for snails.

It all started with Jeremy the "one in a million" rare mutant garden snail who has an anti-clockwise spiralling shell. It means his genitals are on the wrong side making it difficult for him to mate.

An appeal was made to find another snail with a left spiralling shell in the hope the pair could "hook up" and TWO were found - one in Ipswich and one in Majorca.

However things didn't quite go to plan...

On a more serious note, Dr Angus Davison reckons this study could be beneficial to humans.

    Quote Message

Last year we discovered a gene, which when variable in snails makes them coil to the left or the right. We also found that the same gene seems to be involved in setting up the body asymmetry of our cells. So the process of determining left and right side of the body is so deeply conserved that snails and humans are probably using the same set of genes."

Dr Angus Davison, University of Nottingham’s School of Life Sciences

He said there's a chance this could lead to developments in helping people born with their organs in the wrong place.
