    Police have confirmed two people died in the crash which shut the M1 for several hours yesterday.

    It involved two cars and a lorry near the junction with the M6 and A14 in south Leicestershire at about 16:00.

    The driver and a passenger in a white Fiat 500 - two men in their 50s - were pronounced dead at the scene.

    The driver of a Corsa was treated for minor injuries while the HGV driver was unhurt.

    It tells the story of the county since the Pilgrim Fathers made the famous voyage aboard the Mayflower.

    One of their leaders - William Brewster - was from Scrooby.

    Police searching for missing convict Sean Perry have confirmed a possible sighting in Leeds was not him.

    Perry, 46, who also uses the surnames Cawthray and Goldthorpe, was last seen at his probation-approved address in Leicester at 14:00 on Monday 19 June.

    He also has links to Bridlington, Leeds and Suffolk.

    Members of the public are being advised not to approach him, but call the police immediately.

    Police used a stinger to stop a stolen car speeding through Derbyshire in the early hours of this morning.

    Officers chased the Volkswagen Golf along the A6 in Wilmorton, past the Donington Park racetrack and through Swadlincote, before it was brought to a halt on the A514, near Calke Abbey.

    A 16-year-old, from Woodville, and a 21-year-old man, were arrested in a nearby field on suspicion of theft of a car, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

    The man, from Derby, was also arrested on suspicion of obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty.

    They both remain in custody.

    A diabetic patient has said she had no idea she had to renew her medical exemption card for free prescription.

    Louise Jarman, 45, from Chesterfield, has been diabetic since she was six years old and is entitled to free prescriptions, but was fined when she was told her exemption card had expired.

    She said: "I received a letter out of the blue saying that I have not got an exemption card or a letter saying that I get free prescription, and they were fining me £50.

    "I didn't know the card went out of date. They said they were fining me and I couldn't get any more prescriptions until I paid the fine.

    "Eventually they dropped the charge but I was told I would have to pay for my previous prescription that I'd had, and any more until my card was renewed."

    Louise's fine was one of 979,210 issued by NHS Business Services Authority in 2016-17 - bringing in £13.3m - compared with 494,129 in 2015-16.

    One of our reporters has just sent us this footage of a fire at the Burger King restaurant at Lady Bay Retail Park in Nottingham.

    Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue has told me three crews are at the scene, from West Bridgford, Carlton and London Road.

    They were called at 09:20. We will bring you more when we get it.

    Nine shops sold knives to underage teenagers in Nottingham during a sting operation, Nottinghamshire Police has said.

    It's illegal to sell a knife to under-18s.

    Nottinghamshire Police sent youngsters to 35 shops in the city and Netherfield in June and July.

    The shops that failed will be investigated and now face prosecution.

    Police said it's an improvement on the 44% fail rate in 2016.

    Eighteen-time grand slam singles champion Martina Navratilova has said she "likes what she sees" of Katie Boulter's tennis.

    Boulter, 20, of Woodhouse Eaves, Leicestershire, admitted she was "devastated" following a three set loss to Christina McHale at SW19 on Tuesday.

    Speaking about Boulter's reaction, nine-time Wimbledon winner Navratilova, said: "I love it. She is devastated, I love it, it should hurt.

    "If you care, it hurts and then you've got to try and get better and improve and try to figure it out and next time you play that player or anybody else and you're in the same position she will remember it and hopefully learn from it.

    "Her first Wimbledon, I'm pretty sure we'll see her again, I like what I see of her out there."

    It's emerged that some part-time firefighters have failed to turn up when called out to attend incidents in Nottinghamshire.

    A report from the city and county fire authority, seen by the BBC, shows 10 examples where retained staff were absent, despite being on call.

    In one case, two staff had to be brought in to cover and in another, a firefighter failed to attend because a pager didn't go off.

    The fire service says this has happened on a minority of occasions.

    Derby Museum and Art Gallery wants to expand into the neighbouring Central Library, when the library is moved to the council house.

    The plans would see the Museum and Art Gallery hold corporate events there while the Silk Mill is being redeveloped. This would include events like weddings.

    Tony Butler, the museum's executive director, said: "It [Central Library] is going to have public use, it is not going to be thrown to the private sector.

    "It will also have a commercial use that will then help us cover the running costs of it...the profits also add to our resilience by helping us generate more earned income."
