Stress levels of aeroplane pilots will be monitored by using smart textiles, as part of a European research project with Nottingham Trent University.
The university’s advanced textiles research group will explore how smart textiles embedded in cockpit seats and pilot clothing can measure anxiety.
Professor Tilak Dias who leds the group said: "By using smart textiles we’re able to provide new prognostic and diagnostic techniques for pilot monitoring in a completely non-intrusive way."
Indicators of stress including a variable heart rate, perspiration and body temperature will be monitored by putting sensors into the yarns which are used to make clothing and textiles.
The heart rate will be monitored and it will be possible to monitor fatigue and if a pilot is losing alertness.
The project, which is called Active Simulator Cockpit Enhancement, will enhance cockpit simulators which is funded with £1.24m from the European Commission.
It is led by SerTec Engineering in Spain, with Paragon SA in Greece, and Nottingham Trent University.

A 39-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the murder of his wife.
Baldeep Singh admitted killing 35-year-old Amandeep Kaur at their home on Dovedale Road in Thurmaston.
After Singh killed his wife in February he called the police to tell them - he said he did it because he thought she was going to leave him.
Officers then found Amandeep dead in her bedroom. A post-mortem examination revealed she died as a result of a laceration to the neck.
Quote MessageDue to Singh’s actions two young children have lost their mother and he now faces a prison sentence with little or no contact with his children. I hope today’s guilty plea will help Amandeep’s family move on with their lives and put the events of her murder behind them."
Detective Inspector Chris Barratt, Leicestershire Police

As the exam period is in full swing, the newly elected MP for Nottingham North Alex Norris, has said schools are becoming too obsessed with results.
He said more attention should be given to what children actually achieve than what exam results they get.
Mr Norris said: "If all Ofsted ever talk about are about results and progress, then that is what teachers and leaders... are going to skew towards.
"If we look more about what children went on to do after leaving secondary school for example, how well skilled they were in the world, we would see a bit more focus there.
"The balance I believe is much too one way than the other."
We'll let you know what Ofsted say when they get back to us.
Here's a great little video from last night's storm as it reached Newark. Spectacular stuff!:
