    Stage four of the Tour of Britain has begun in Mansfield - even though cyclists have been banned in the town.

    Mansfield District Council stopped people riding around the market place because they wanted to combat "anti-social" cycling.

    The district council said "responsible" cyclists were welcome in the market place to watch the tour today.

  3. 'Extinct' plant rediscovered at Peak District National Parkpublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 6 September 2017

    A plant previously thought to be globally extinct has been rediscovered at the Peak District National Park.

    Two populations of the leek-coloured hawkweed, 62 plants in total, have been found on the banks of the Monsal Trail in Chee Dale.

    Dr Tim Rich found the Hieracium subprasinifolium while collecting seeds for Kew's Millennium Seed Bank.

    Rhodri Thomas (below), natural environment and rural economy team manager for the Peak District National Park, said: “We are delighted with the discovery of Hieracium subprasinifolium close to the Monsal Trail – it’s one of the best indications we could ask for to show that the work we do to look after the trail side verges and the embankments is good for wildlife."

    Hundreds of people are gathered in Mansfield market place for the start of stage four of the Tour of Britain.

    The riders, including Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas, will be cycling 165km to the finish line in Newark.

    The race is due to begin at 11:00 and the expected finish time in Newark is about 15:20.

  5. Ayeeshia-Jayne Smith: MP frustrated after serious case reviewpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 6 September 2017

    The Conservative MP for Burton, Andrew Griffiths, said social workers let down 21-month-old Ayeeshia-Jayne Smith who was murdered by her mother Kathryn Smith in 2014.

    Mr Griffiths said he was frustrated that no one has been held accountable despite a serious case review, which said mistakes had been made by Derbyshire County Council and Queen's Hospital in Burton.

    The review found social workers missed signs of danger around the toddler who was stamped to death at her home in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

    However, the report said the girl's death could not have been predicted.

    Three men are back home after being freed from a Swiss jail, 13 weeks after being arrested.

    David Bentley from Bridgnorth, Julian Wilson from Nottinghamshire and Adrian Harrold from Wolverhampton, were taking part in a car rally tour when they were arrested over violations of Switzerland's road traffic laws.

    The men were handed suspended sentences of between 13 and 14 months, after being accused of reaching speeds of up to 177kph (109mph).

    The organiser of the rally said friends and family went out the bring the men and their cars home.

    A motorcyclist who died in a crash on the A365 in Sells Green has been named as David Nicholas Gregory, from Belper.

    Wiltshire Police said, external Mr Gregory was riding a Honda CBR 900 at about 17:50 on 1 September when he is believed to have lost control of the bike.

    The force added a file will now be prepared on behalf of HM Coroner for Wiltshire.

    Leicester might not be able to field deadline-day signing Adrien Silva until January because of Fifa regulations.

    The Foxes signed the midfielder from Sporting Lisbon for £22m - after selling Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea - but finalised parts of the deal near the close of the summer transfer window.

    If Fifa decides Silva's registration was not completed in time he will be ineligible, but the Premier League club will still be required to pay his wages.

    The club said it was "exploring all options to find a resolution".

    The Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit this morning tweeted, external about a police interception on the A50.

    According to the unit, the driver ran until he fell into a large patch of nettles.

    Hopefully there was a dock leaf nearby.

    In case you missed this yesterday...

    Vandals catapulted ball bearings across Leicester and Leicestershire on Monday evening, damaging more than 40 cars and property windows in a few hours.

    Police said the offenders "fired substantial bearings with power" as they drove around.

    Retailer Next had three large windows smashed at its headquarters in Enderby.

    Sue and Jim Lapworth discovered a hole in the window of their home on Hinckley Road in Leicester Forest East.

    Mrs Lapworth said: "There was an almighty bang and we both thought it was a picture that had dropped off the wall or the shower that had fallen into the bath."

    Older people in Leicestershire are among the loneliest in the country according to a national charity helpline.

    Silverline, which supports older people who are lonely, said August was their busiest month with Leicestershire in the top 10 busiest areas for callers in the country.

    Nina Gopal, from the charity, said part of the problem is caused by the holiday season.

    She said: "Some of the key people in the community that they are used to seeing may not be available, so their local GP that they are used to seeing may be replaced by a locum or the local person in their corner shop may have gone on holiday."

    Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust is planning to run boat trips along the River Derwent as part of future plans to restore and use the 13-mile stretch of river.

    The trips, which will be between the council house steps and the weir at Darley Abbey, will rely on public donations.

    Chris Madge, the chairman of the restoration committee, hopes the boats will be out next summer.

    "We anticipate that we will probably have boats that will allow 12 people to go up and down the river so we will anticipate this will be a tremendous draw for tourism and obviously they can enjoy the other delights that Derby has to offer."

    Residents were evacuated from a block of flats because of a fire in a high-rise building in Nottingham city centre last night.

    Crews from London Road, West Bridgford and Carlton were called at about 19:55 yesterday.

    Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze was in a mezzanine apartment in the building, which consists of both flats and commercial units.

    Residents were allowed back in at about 21:00.

    The Tour of Britain will visit Nottinghamshire today with 124 of the world's best cyclists expected to take part.

    After more than 70 years since the first race in 1945, the tour will include Mansfield and Newark for the the first time.

    The route will go through Newstead Abbey and Sherwood Forest.

    Residents in Bilsthorpe, Edingley, Newstead and Collingham have been decorating their streets to show the county off at its best.
