    Changes on how much sugar can be made in the UK could see an increase in jobs at a Newark firm.

    The change in EU regulations which will come into force at the weekend will remove limits on how much sugar companies can export.

    Paul Kenward, managing director at British Sugar in Newark, said: "British Sugar, believe it or not, was only allowed to sell 1.056 tonnes of sugar a year.

    "If we produced more than that when the weather went our way and we had a good crop, we had to store it. Now we are able to sell it, we will look to invest in our supply chain...so we can get sugar out to Europe and beyond."

  4. Gas canister used to raid cash machinepublished at 09:53 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Here's a little more on last night's cash machine raid at The Co-operative in Kibworth.

    Leicestershire Police said, external thieves used a gas canister to open the machine, in High Street at about 00:40, before stealing money from inside.

    Officers are now carrying out a forensic search and checking CCTV footage.

    A local resident said on Twitter, external they heard a loud boom, followed by drilling and the sound of a car driving away at high speed.

    Derby County boss Gary Rowett described the late equaliser conceded by his team at Brentford last night as "sloppy" and "really poor".

    The Rams led 1-0 going into the final stages at Griffin Park before an 86th minute strike by Ollie Watkins meant they had to settle for a point.

    Rowett said: "It was a sloppy goal to give away. We had dealt with virtually everything they threw at us. To concede a goal like that was really poor."

    The draw leaves them 15th in the table - six points off the play-off places.

    BBC News has been talking to state school pupils who have made it to Cambridge University.

    They include Alfreton's John Severn. He clinched his place to study maths after getting four A* grades at A-level.

    Remarkably, he's the first in his immediate family to go to university.

    Derby's Arts and Theatre Association has criticised the city council's plans for a £32m venue to replace the Assembly Rooms.

    Chairman Steve Dunning said the authority had failed to honour its promise to consult members about the design of the new building, which would have no provision to host major theatre productions.

    Mr Dunning said: "We feel the council is going for the cheaper option when it should be bold and go for the proper option."

    The BBC was given exclusive access to see how smuggled drugs and weapons are being seized at East Midlands Airport.

    In the past officers have caught heroin stitched into boxing gloves and in one case the back of a television screen was replaced by four blocks of cocaine.

    Andy Plumb, a Border Force officer, showed us a box which was believed to be filled with drugs.

    He said: "It was described as breakfast granola but it looks like cannabis, it smells like cannabis."

    Tests confirmed it contained drugs.

    A group which hands out hot meals and clothes to the homeless has seen a rise in the number of people it supports.

    Walkers Notts which meets weekly in Sneinton said they see about 80 people a week compared to 20 people just 11 months ago.

    Denise Walker, from the group, said: "They are just young and old vulnerable people...we are getting different people all the time.

    "We have had a few pregnant ladies...I don't know if they are homeless but they are coming here for help."

    A man arrested on suspicion of murdering a pensioner in a Leicestershire village is still in police custody.

    The body of an elderly woman was discovered at her home in Fleckney, near Market Harborough, on Sunday morning.
