  18. North-south divide 'moving south'published at 10:38 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2017

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC Local Live

Where do you consider the north-south divide to be? For a lot of people it's Watford Gap service station on the M1 in Northamptonshire.

Well according to a university professor it's not far off - it's actually here at a farm in Gopsall near Twycross in Leicestershire.

    Farmer gates

Chris Lloyd is a professor of quantitative geography at Liverpool University - his theory is based on the "population centre".

He claims the dividing line is moving further south as more people move south: "The north-south divide is moving south because the south is gaining an ever- increasing share of the population of Britain."

Using this theory the centre point in 1971 was between Newhall and Upper Midway in Derbyshire. By 2011 it moved almost 7.7 miles to Snarestone in Leicestershire. Now it's moved a further 1.2 miles south to Gopsall.
