    Campaigners opposing a new housing development on the edge of a world heritage site in Derbyshire have said they're disappointed the plans have been approved.

    A Derby developer wants to build 65 houses just outside Belper.

    Locals have said the scheme, passed at an Amber Valley council meeting last night, could hit the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site's Unesco status.

    It celebrates the area as the birthplace of industrialisation.

    Nottingham City Council plans to axe 200 jobs in a bid to save £27m by April 2019.

    The authority said it has identified £21m, which includes these jobs, but has a gap of £6m.

    Deputy leader Graham Chapman said council tax would rise by 4.9% to fund the "rising costs" of adult social care.

    The city council added that it has saved over £232m since 2010 and it is at "tipping point".

    Mr Chapman said it's government funding has been cut by "half in the last three years... and by 80% since 2010".

    The consultation period for the proposals are due to end early February before the final decision is taken the following month.

    Residents have been urged to be vigilant after nine burglaries in just 10 days in Rushcliffe.

    Nottinghamshire Police has stepped up patrols after the break-ins in Ruddington, Gotham, Keyworth and Nornanton-on-the-Wolds.

    Most of the offences took place during mid to late afternoon and involved forcing patio doors or a panel in the back doors open to enter the properties.

    A man who killed his 14-year-old friend after body-slamming him in a row over £5 has been sentenced for manslaughter.

    Nottingham Crown Court heard Reece Seagrave was rendered unconscious instantly after Cole Mackin (below), 18, picked him up by his legs and threw him to the ground on 20 April in Aspley, Nottingham.

    Reece was taken to a property on nearby Tenbury Crescent, but later died in hospital.

    Mackin was handed a sentence of three years and eight months.

    As he was 17 at the time of the offence, he will serve his custodial sentence in a young offenders institution.

    Tins of chocolate and 10 chocolate Santas have been stolen from car that was parked in Glossop.

    It happened on Linacre Way on the morning of 7 December.

    Three power drills and two drill bit sets were also stolen from a van parked on Hathersage Drive at about the same time.

    Derbyshire Police is appealing to anyone who might have information on the thefts to get in touch with them.

    Toys R Us is facing an uncertain future in the UK after it was told to put £9m into its struggling pension fund by the Pension Protection Fund (PPF).

    It has to come up with the money by Thursday in order for the PPF to agree to the retailer's restructuring plan.

    Earlier this month, Toys R Us said it would close at least 26 UK stores, leading to the loss of up to 800 jobs, as part of the plan. The firm has several shops across the East Midlands.

    Failure to agree a deal could put all its 3,200 staff at risk of redundancy.

    Officers investigating the rape and attempted murder of a woman in Ilkeston say they've received dozens of calls after she made a video appeal.

    Derbyshire Police said the woman was strangled and assaulted by a man on Queen's Avenue early on 26 November.

    Officers say 38 people have rung with potential information since the woman's plea for help was released last week along with an artist's impression of the suspect.

    Police in South Yorkshire are continuing to search four houses in Sheffield after early morning raids in the city and in Chesterfield.

    Counter terrorism police say that people may have heard "loud bangs" as officers entered the suspects' houses.

    Elizabeth Fogarty who lives nearby one of the houses that were raided described how she thought "someone had crashed outside the house."

    A dead six-week-old puppy found in a pink box on a Swadlincote street "may have been alive" when it was dumped.

    The brown and white crossbreed-type puppy was found by a member of the public on Friday. He was in a pink box on Guildford Avenue.

    RSPCA Inspector Charlotte Melvin said: “The poor puppy was really thin and was suffering from worms - there were worms inside the box.

    “There are no obvious injuries so there is a chance that this poor puppy died as a result of being neglected as they clearly needed veterinary treatment."

    A 49-year-old woman was pushed to the floor and kicked during an attempted theft in Derby.

    Derbyshire Police said a man carried out the attack in Arlington Road on 6 December at about 17:15.

    The man has been described as eastern European, in his mid-20s and wearing a dark blue hooded jacket, dark bottoms, sandy coloured pump and a knitted hat.

    North East Counter Terrorism Police say a fourth address in Sheffield has been raided as part of a series of anti-terror arrests.

    A raid in Stocksbridge came after three others in the city.

    In all, two homes in the Burngreave area were raided, one address in Meersbrook and one address in Stocksbridge.

    Police say the investigation is "Islamist related".

    The bomb squad has been called to an address in Chesterfield and people living nearby are being evacuated.

    The raid in Chesterfield at Whittington Moor has led to Cavendish Junior School keeping children inside as a precaution.

    The men arrested in Sheffield are 22, 36 and 41. The man arrested in Chesterfield is 31.

    Derby Mountain Rescue is expecting to record it's busiest year ever.

    So far this year the team has been required 53 times - that's the same as 2012 but there's still a few more weeks of the year to go.

    David O'Sullivan told the BBC he's expecting walkers to need their help over Christmas.

    His advice to those planning a trip in the mountains is to "know your limits" and to make sure someone knows where you're going.

    Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital in Kibworth has more hedgehogs lodging with them for winter than ever before.

    More than 150 hedgehogs are currently in their care and will stay with them until the spring.

    Harriet Childs is one of those caring for the hedgehogs - she said the babies they have are all too small to hibernate.

    She said without the help of the hospital they would "perish" outside in the cold.
