    A controlled explosion was carried out at a factory in Darley Dale last night after "potentially volatile material" was discovered.

    About 100 employees were evacuated while the material was investigated and disposed of.

    Dean Gazzard from Derbyshire Fire Service said there was no risk to residents living in the area.

    A man has admitted being involved in the kidnap and robbery of a Leicester jeweller, who was found dead in Stoughton.

    Ramniklal Jogiya was reported missing when he failed to return home after locking up his shop on Belgrave Road on 24 January. His body was found the following morning in Gaulby Lane.

    Callan Reeve pleaded guilty to charges of kidnap and robbery at Leicester Crown Court. The 20-year-old, from Biddle Road, Leicester denied the charge of murder.

    Reeve is one of four men charged with the kidnap, robbery and murder of Mr Jogiya.

    Leicestershire Police were warned that a woman had bought sulphuric acid and was planning an attack, months before she poured it over her boyfriend, leaving him blind and severely burned.

    In July 2016, Katie Leong poured acid over Daniel Rotariu as he slept at their home in Leicester.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct has found the force received a report about Leong acquiring acid to carry out an attack in February that year.

    Leong was not contacted by Leicestershire Police regarding this allegation, two calls logs were closed down inappropriately without further action being recommended, and there had been a potential failure to conduct proper risk assessments.

    As a result of the investigation Leicestershire Police has agreed to look at clarifying the guidance given to control room staff over what actions are expected of them. A police sergeant faced allegations of misconduct but the case was not proven.

    There was also a case of misconduct against a former team leader although formal action could not be taken as she was no longer serving in a staff role. The performance of another staff member and police constable were also found to be unsatisfactory and were dealt with through management action.

    Tributes have been paid to a woman known as the "godmother, external" of sumo wrestling following her death at the age of 85.

    Doreen Simmons, who was born in Nottingham, moved to Japan in the 1970s and became a commentator on the sport for a national broadcaster.

    Steve Pateman, a champion sumo wrestler, added that the 85-year-old's slight presence alongside some of the sport's competitors was "a sight to behold".

    The inaugural Loughborough Trophy, which is being held at the university, features former world number 44 Lukas Lacko (below) as its top seed.

    Organisers had hoped Andy Murray would use the event to begin his comeback from injury, but the three-time grand slam champion has not entered.

    The tournament runs from Saturday 19 to Sunday 27 May.

    Approval has been granted for three new grass and flower-covered classrooms at an Ashbourne primary school.

    The proposed eco-extension, for St Oswald's Primary School, is to create space for 70 more pupils.

    The classrooms will be covered in grass and flowers to help them blend into the field behind.

    Head teacher Rebecca Wood said that will initially there be two classrooms, with a separate application for a hard surface play area and the option for a third classroom.

    She added: "Everyone is really pleased, relieved and happy that it is all going ahead."

    Only two applications have been made across Leicester to hold street parties to celebrate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding.
