A consultation begins today on plans for Space Park Leicester which it's claimed could bring thousands of jobs to the East Midlands.
The state-of-the-art facility could be built next to the National Space Centre in the city and would allow for the assembling and testing of satellites.
It is hoped a range of space-related businesses may be attracted to the region where they will also train scientists.
Prof Martin Barstow, from the University of Leicester, said: "We're trying to change the way commercial space [firms] operate. We're hoping to lower the cost of getting into space and lower the cost of actually working in space which means applying production-line techniques to the building of satellites.
"That's a huge market which will open up and be led from the East Midlands, if we're successful."
