  13. Police 'facing ambulance dilemma' in mental health casespublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 28 June 2018

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Police officers responding to calls involving people with mental health issues are faced with waiting for ambulances "on a daily basis" according to Leicestershire's Deputy Chief Constable Rob Nixon.

He told the police and crime commissioner's ethics, integrity and complaints committee that officers - including armed response teams - are finding themselves weighing up whether to transport patients to hospital in the back of police cars or waiting for an ambulance to arrive every day.

Mr Nixon told the panel there had been one instance when armed police transported a patient to the hospital rather than waiting for an ambulance so they could return to their duties sooner.

    Ambulance

"Officers always ask themselves 'is there a risk to life?' If there's not, they are left with a situation where they need to get a person from point A to point B in order to reach a medical practitioner and get them to a place of safety," he said.

Asked by a panel member why the police weren't charging the ambulance service for times they had stepped in, he responded: "I think we are doing the right thing at the moment. We can't say to EMAS [East Midlands Ambulance Service] you've got 30 minutes and if you're not here within that time we're sending you an invoice."
